Not wanting to confuse you Joolz :D but there are varieties which although are bush (upright ) tend to spread therefore known as having a lax habit, sort of semi-trailing but not a real trailer. See, quite clear.:heehee:

Does anyone know if you can train Lady Boothby as a standard? I have a couple of cuttings taken this year. I know the parent plant I took the cutting from did say it could reach several feet in height. The parent plant had kinda just been left to do it's thing.

    Thanks :D

I would say Lady Boothby would be to rampant ,and although you will get it up as a standard fast ,making a nice compact head would be difficult ..In theory you can grow any fuchsia as a standard but some are better than others due to the growth habit .
No harm in trying if you want though ..

Thanks davygfuchsia. I will give it a go. I noticed that left to it's own devices it seemed to go a bit crazy. Seems to get tall fast, so controlling it might be a challenge. It's worth a stab though like you said :dbgrtmb:

      Thanks again.

Good tip when growing standards.Allways ensure that the supporting cane goes through the head of the plant,or you could find the head laying on the flower bed, following a windy day........bin there dunnit:cry3:

Some Trailing fuchsias can make very good standards, especially ones like
      Swingtime,and Marinka.

In my opinion,NOT a good idea to remove leaves from the stem, leve them on till the head has formed......plants need leaves to breathe, only remove surplus side shoots.

Best variety for a begginner to use to grow a standard is the old favourite
red and white small double flowered "Snowcap" cant go wrong with this one.

      Hope this may help...Howard

PS. Use a high nitrogen feed to help it on its way,and ensure stem is tied tight to the cane (nothing worse than a dog leg stem) and periodicly remove ties
and retie an inch away to avoid awful dents in the stem.

The best that I can say about its growth habit is that it is appallingly messy!

Loving that Fuchsia, very unusual; I often prefer more restrained flowers as opposed to big showy ones......:thumb:

Me too. I've grown one that is a little showy (in so much as it's rather different) the last couple of years called "Satellite".............

Don't usually like Fuchsias in this colour but I make the odd exception.

                Hi Longk.

                Love your two fuchsias .
I was into the unusual ones a couple of years back, but have moved to gladioli ..
I do still have a few unusual ones .
This is just coming into flower .

Hhhmmmmmmm - not my usual colour, but that has a certain something Dave!

Some of the species Gladioli are lovely, but I can't even get Acidanthera to flower!!
Found this on Flickr a few weeks ago..........

                  Snowcap as a standard

Got best in show with this Full standard of Snowcap,in the 1970s hence not the best picture in the world.
