:dbgrtmb: Really lovely Pete. That Erythrina is wonderful. I don't know your Desert Willow, but I see it can grow into a small tree.

              for something bright and bold:

2 different coloured heuchera planted side by side .... these are still babies and will look good when they grow larger, and provide colour during all the seasons

Dim - I love the different coloured foliage of Heuchera - and of course they keep that interest over a very long period of time. Some people even cut the flowers off - but I could never do that.

                Nice heucheras, dim. :dbgrtmb:

We have a couple of dozen around the garden and they are a very rewarding plant. They come in all different sizes from some that never have a spread more than 9" to ones with a spread of 4'. I quite like the flowers. :)

Heucheras are one of my favourite plants to add colour in a garden .... the 2 in the photo are summer berry and electric lime ... both new huechera for 2011

the electric lime changes colour and gets red veins ... to the right of the photo is a part of another heuchera which is new .... it's called georgia peach .... this one can be grown in full sun aswell ... I have planted several georgia peach in a sunny position and have ordered several solar power huecherella which also enjoy a sunny position and which are yellow with red ... there is also a pitch black one which looks interesting ... called black beauty

here is a good site from a well known heuchera breeder:
Terra Nova Nurseries - Home Gardeners - Heuchera

many people don't like heuechera, as they are acustomed to the old dark purple one ...

another plant that I am starting to like immensly is brunnera jack frost .... this won this years perennial plant of the year
Terra Nova Nurseries - Home Gardeners - Brunnera 'Jack Frost'

there is also a more whiteish one called looking glass :
Terra Nova Nurseries - Home Gardeners - Brunnera 'Looking Glass'

plant a shade/semishade border with some evergreen ferns, japanese painted ferns, huechera, brunnera, hakonechloa macra aureola grass on the edges and a few more leafy type plants and you are onto a winner .... and as a bonus, these plants are not expensive, especially if you buy online

I plant these often in peoples gardens, everyone likes this combination and the neighbours end up copying aswell

Like the sound of the electric lime,I must make a note of these, we're going to Harrogate flower show in a couple of weeks sure there'll be lots there, but I'll look online first don't want to pay over the odds, know there's a site called Plantagogo thats sells them, the owner Vicki is a member on another garden site I chat on, she's usually at the garden shows too.
Ooo yes I have Brunnera Jack Frost its lovely even found a few seedlings this year so they'll go in the border too, was thinking of grasses is the hakonechloa the one in your photo dim? not heard of that one.

the grass is called Hakonechloa macra aureola .... the same as in my photo, but mine have just recently been planted and they are small

this won the perennial plant of the year in 2009 and is a definate must have in any garden

                  here is a good link:
                  http://www.perennialplant.org/ppy/2009_POY.pdf

even as a stand alone plant, it is stunning .... I posted a photo of another garden showing one as a stand alone on this same thread ... it's on this page:

Beautiful pictures Angelina - really colourful. I love that Gloriosa. I tried one this year for the first time and mine was a total failure. I don't have your summer heat.

It looks like you can have very cold winters. Wilkepedia says down to -32C. But we would love your summers in the UK.
