Square metres and metres squared

I feel like I'm going loopy!!!

If I have an area of 6m x 6m what is that area in square metres and in metres squared? All websites I read say different things!!!

does that mean metres sq or sq metres? I'm trying to compare prices for topsoil and turf to cover a 6x6m area. But I'm so lost with each site calling the measurement different things (Sq m and m sq!!)

 

Its exactly the same either way, just different people call it slightly different things.
2 square metre is the same as 2 meter squared

The difference if you are really interested - 2 square meters is the end result, i.e. 2x1=2
Whereas, 2 meters squared is 2x1 which equals 2 square meters

ok, so if turf is priced per "Square Metre" and I need to cover a 6x6m area, I need 36 rolls (plus extra incase of errors/whatever) ?

 

Only if one roll will cover 1m2

 

Hmm.... should I just phone up and say I need turf to cover an area of 6m x 6m? Keep myself safe instead of assuming?! lol this is soooo complicated

 

Normally you take your size which is 6mx6m =36m2 add on 5% for cutting etc which gives you a total of 37.8m2 then just round up to 38m2

That is the amount 38m2 if it turns out you have a bit left over just turn it over bottom side up and leave it for 12 mths and you will some excellent compost for borders etc.

If turf is priced square meter, then you will need 36 rolls, generally turf is sold in 1 meter square sizes, so this would be correct. This will give you 36 square meters of turf

 

Strictly speaking - I think 6m by 6m is 6m squared, ie a square with both sides of 6m, which is 36 square meters of course. However you will always find measurements quoted in square meters. So meters squared is an unhelpful and somewhat dangerous measurement to use.

I've never come across the term "metres squared", other than to say 6 m squared, which is of course 36 "square metres".

Now top soil is probably in cubic metres:D

 

And if the topsoil was dropped from a plane you'd have acceleration to take into account, measured in metres per second, per second

I think the easiest way of differentiating is as follows:-
Square Metres - A verbal statement which can also be written in that form.
Metres Squared (M²) - Written shortform symbol of Square Metres.
