I would say yes - they are very similar. Except that zip up thingies tend to get blown around more that cold frames.

However you can make a cold frame very easily. You get most protection if you build it against a house wall, then add three sides of bricks and put an old window on top. You can make it any size or shape you want. Just as efficient as an expensive job, and you can dismantle it and tidy it away in the summer.

    Here's one I prepared earlier. :D

Thats a great idea Peter :dbgrtmb: A few aerated concrete blocks and an old shower door , and as you say it dismantles in 10 minutes. This will solve my April/May space problem .
Now I wonder if Mrs H minds showering without a shower door for 2 months :D

Oh, can't help you there, i'm veg & wildflower dept. I have seen introduced cyclamens surviving outside in the UK, but I assume there are many varieties & wouldn't like to take a guess at hardiness.:)

This coldframe (approx 1.8 x 1.45 x 0.8 m high) thinks it's a PVC zip up thingy and it's on special at the moment:

Polythene zip up coldframe for £9.95
