Another from my Mixed Perennial Seed ?

This is another plant grown from my packets of mixed perennial seed and I've been waiting for it to flower for a while now, the first 4 or 5 buds 'dried' up and fell off but then the next lot kept getting bigger and bigger until today this rather subtle but lovely creamy coloured flower popped open.

I'm thinking it looks Hibiscus like, but not sure, any ideas what it is everyone?

Hi Spruce, that did cross my mind too but thought they were 'usually' brighter colours and larger flowers??

 

Have a look at the variety Sunishine, very alike its the leaves that convince me that it is a holyhock, yours is a nice single and from seed !!! so you will get lots of diffrent shades its still very nice

I think it is Abelmoschus 'Hibiscus manihot..
I grew something similar a couple of years ago ,does it have a marroon eye ?

Yes Dave it does have a very deep marroon eye...

The leaves don't look right for Hibiscus to me. Is it a Mallow?

 

Sorry Marley, did not see your post earlier....You are right Okra is the more common name ..I think the plant had a name change somewhere along the line.

Believe the seeds can be toasted and ground ... Spruce :WINK1: :WINK1:

It's proving a tricky one this :D

After further googling the flowers now don't appear big enough to be Hibiscus 'manihot', apparently they should be between 4" & 6", mine is about 2-3". Also the leaves seem more deeply cut than mine? The flower itself though still looks very similar.

I've googled Mallow flowers and can't find one that looks similar, not to say it isn't :thumb:

And I can't really find a similar Hollyhock either???

 

The Okra looks promising; this link shows a red stemmed variety (with red seed pods too) and does mention that there is a green variety :thumb:

This extract from another website just about mentions all the before mentioned plants :D

"okra, (Hibiscus, or Abelmoschus, esculentus), herbaceous, hairy, annual plant of the mallow family (Malvaceae)."

I got my seed from Jungle plants a few years back and fairly certain it was labelled Hibiscus Manihot .. I must admit I was expecting a large plant but was disappointed so never grew it again ..Just looked on their site and it is under Abelmoschus 'Hibiscus manihot'

I can see that the leaves are very similar, but the flower completely different, but that can of course be put down to open pollination, hybrids etc...
