Passed my test in 1994, used to ride a 100cc Honda for years on L plates & a provisional before that.

Do I need to take a CBT Thinger ?

If you have a car licence...

If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).
If you obtained a full car licence after 1 February 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL 196 certificate to validate your entitlement.

Cheers Jack, should have thought to look at that site myself, just very very tired at the moment, need a break from work, but can't afford it:DOH:

That could be good news, as I need to get a moped for the boy to get to college but didn't know how I was going to collect it.:dbgrtmb:

Are you getting yourself a nifty fifty Zig?

If you can get past the mockery from kids as they overtake you on their push bikes, its a great idea. They do about 100 miles to the gallon, cost next to nowt to tax and insure, and are light enough to push when that little two stroke engine that's been screaming away for miles suddenly decides it needs a little rest.

I had one on a provisional before CBT days. It was great, but seeing as I didn't pass my car test until 2003 I have to do my CBT if I wanted another moped.

My other half says, if your provisional licence is still valid you won't have to take the test. If it isn't valid you will have to take the CBT before applying for the licence and apparently you can't ride a bike until you've done that. :)

I think you're ok, because you passed your test before the change in the law. I passed after the change, so the provisional that would have entitled me went off and got replaced with a nice pink one, without the moped classification listed on it:(

Are you saying Ziggy that you've got a full licence for riding a bike. If so, it should show up in the listings on your current car licence.

If its 2 stroke, you can take them up beyond the 4.5 hp limit using a bit of ingenuity (or you could years ago, I don't know about the newer engines).

You take the baffles out of the exhaust, and you remove and bit the carburettor. Off with the cylinder head, then slide the cylinder off. Widen the inlet and exhaust ports with a file, being sure to only take a bit off horizontally and down over, but never up over. Stick it all back together but replace the carb with a wider one off a slightly bigger engine.

The result, it goes a bit quicker for a while (except tickover packs in, and the engine randomly croaks after a while):)

Ziggy, Mopeds and motorcycles are great means of transport and enormous fun. - If you are getting the moped for your son to use - PLEASE get him to get some proper training, not just the CBT. There is bound to be an accredited school near you and after he has some experience, consider taking the IAM Advanced Rider Course.
