Over the past week, when i've woken up at 3am i've seen a bright object pretty much overhead, it is an irregular shape. Tried to find the binoculars to get a better look last night but failed. Have them at the ready now.

A bit of googling made me wonder if it was this,

    'Instant cosmic classic' supernova discovered

Will have a look if I wake up in the night again.

It was brighter than Venus & the Dog Star.

I don't know how long these events typically last, but I'll be up at that hour at the weekend, so if the sky is clear I'll have a look.

Should be weeks or months, imagine what will happen here in 5 aeons.

As the sun burns up its last remaining hydrogen, it will expand into a red giant. If you were able to watch the sunrise from Newcastle the first arc of the sunrise will stretch from Norway to Austria.

The oceans will boil off into space as the atmosphere is stripped by the solar winds and all life on the planet will be incinerated.

The suns expansion will engulf Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, but then it will get to the stage when gravity can't hold this massive outer shell & it will be thrown off in a cataclismic explosion, leaving behind a smaller but very dense ball of helium, a brown dwarf.

The explosion will be seen all around the galaxy & most alien races will shrug their shoulders & say "Serves them right for inventing the "i'm a celebrity series"

            From your link:
"Astronomers believe they caught the supernova within hours of its  explosion, a rare feat made possible with a specialized survey  telescope and state-of-the-art computational tools"

No need for special telescopes or computers, they could have saved a shed load of money by asking you first Ziggy!

My son has suggested it might be the International Space Station, it would be brighter than Venus and the Dog Star. :)

That was my first thought Sheal, untill I realised it wasn't moving.

Woohoo! I came off nightshift this morning...
Going to "try" and image M101 (the Galaxy that the supernova is in) this weekend, weather prevailing of course!!!

The Dog Star - Sirius A/B is around Mag. -1.5 which means that it probably wan't the SN that you saw... maybe an Irridium flare ???

Ive tracked the ISS a few times myself, got an excellent app on my iPhone called 'starmaps.' As Ziggy said, it moves very very quickly.... One of the best times I saw it was when Atlantis was docked on for a supply mission. The brightness was intensified presumably from the extra glare due to it's angle and reflection. So beautiful though :)

Will look out for the below if I get a chance!! Heading up to the highlands tomorrow so will make for very clear viewing :).... If the weather allows!!

Did you catch much of perseids this time round?

We were clouded out... wanted to try and film the sky with an old CCTV camera (low LUX) and motion detection software... will need to wait for the Leonids me thinks..
The Highlands will be good assuming there's no mountains or Monroes blocking the southern vista  And of course the weather stays clear!!!

We're lucky, as we're not that far from the Galloway Forest, and Britains darkest skies :dbgrtmb:
