    Here's a couple of pics of the new arch over the entrance to my veg patch and you can also see the two re-located compost bins either side of the patch;

      That's a pretty good Arch, Bilbo. I like how you've positioned it to make it a central point. Have you decided what you're going to grow on it?:D:rolleyespink:

      I'm toying with the idea of planting two Clematis on it; I've been growing a few on in pots all year after buying them as young plants in the spring :thumb:

      Looks brilliant Bilbo, I think it'd look amazing smothered in clematis flower . What types are they?

      If you're going to plant some Clematis by the Arch, Bilbo, I would plant more than two so that it looks lush. I've planted 5 clematis on one side and 8 on the other side of my Arch, all different varieties, plus Sweetpeas and Nasturtiums and the Archway disappears under them"!!:D

        Hi Armandii; I've got 3 Clematis to find homes for, Hagley Hybrid, The President and Warszawska Nike, I also have a perennial Sweet Pea, so they might all go on it..:D

        Update on the jobs in the garden, well after the large amount of rain we've had round here over the last few weeks I've taken the opportunity to mulch some of the plants that benefit from it now the ground is no longer dust :D

        My other Cannas that were planted in the ground have also been lifted and are in the shed drying off, luckily I got them up before the wet weather set in so they were quite dry anyway :thumb:

        Three Clematis and a perennial Sweetpea sounds like a good start, Bilbo, for the Archway and those are good varieties of Clematis too.:D I guess getting the Cannas up and drying for the Winter must be a load off your mind. I'll keep mine out for a while until the weather gets worse.
        I'm digging out the centre of my Compost heap, which is easily 8' high so that I can use the black stuff for the borders. I'm waiting for the delivery of Roses Compassion, Bright Future, Alchemist, White Cloud, and Mdme Alfred Carriere, all climbers, as bare roots. Compassion and Alchemist are going either side of the Arbor I built this year, while the other three are destined for one side of the pond. I've still got around 200 tulips to plant, the only trouble being that where ever I dig I find bulbs there already!!! I'm leaving the Dahlias and Begonias out until I get a frost and then I'll sort them out. I've got to cut a least two branches off my Acer Brilliantissimum because they're getting in the way when you go down to the pond, and I haven't taken the pond pump out yet so that's another job!"!:heehee::D

        Just looked back at my original list of things to do and all I have left is to put up the 'blow away' greenhouse and build a couple of large planters.....I'm very happy with my progress :D :thumbsup:

        That said there will always be extra jobs that pop up and I hope they do.........oh wait they just have I've got some shrubs to plant; a Acer pensylvanicum 'Erythrocladum' (ok strictly a tree but it's multi stemmed now), Pterostyrax hispida and a Xanthoceras sorbifolium, I grew all these from seed a few years ago and they are in large pots awaiting permanent homes, I love just popping out the back for an hour or two and doing something :thumb:

          Reading all your posts is great,you all sound like you are doing a brilliant job...you're really spuring me on...I've a couple of roses to plant...a climber 'new dawn' ...i'm getting Mr lolimac to knock in a couple of scaffolding poles for me...i know it sounds a bit drastic but i've heard it can be a bit of a thug but lovely all the same and i've made the mistake before in not having a secure enough support....also a 'gertrude jekyll'.There are shrubs to move, plants to cut back and a good allround tidy up and i'm sure i'll find more to do...Thanks for the enthusiasim:dbgrtmb:

            We've got to lift all the gladis that we planted this year because Mrs Shiney bought them on the market as dwarf gladis and they all grew to over 6ft :rolleyespink:. Near the front of the border wasn't the best place for them :heehee:.

            Our garden takes a lot of maintenance in the winter so it keeps us busy. With a large number of enormous deciduous trees (I've had 14 removed in the last 10 years - either too old or too cramped) we spend ages just clearing leaves. In early Jan I usually have to do my usual moss patrol. I carefully hand remove the vast amount of moss that grows in some of our flower beds but have to do it before the 5,000 - 6,000 snowdrops come through. It seems that the moss only prefers the areas that the snowdrops prefer :scratch:

            No, Harry, we didn't have that forecast frost in West Cheshire so my Begonias, Dahlias and Cannas are still okay and going strong. Yes that's right, I do have 13 Clematis growing on my Archway, as I said 5 on one side and 8 on the other. Why?, because when I see a Clematis I like, and it's cheap, I buy it and then have to find a place for it. So I find a space by the Archway and in it goes:

            So I've not added them all at once, they've gone in over several years.:D

              You lot are making me jealous, I've managed three hours outside in the last two months and that was over this last weekend. A combination of bad weather and still trying to finish off the decor in my now newly refurbished bungalow. Making curtains at the moment, but I'd rather be re-building a dry stone wall. :)
