      Heh, heh, i do enjoy a nice sit-down underan elder.

      I remember being given a really scary reading book by my teacher where exactly this happened. Getting on for 50 years later and I've still not forgotten!

      Last time I want I took the family down to Cornwall, we got pixie led on our way to the seal sanctuary. The satnav took us down a road that started off fine, but got narrower as it went along, to the point where both my wing mirrors were brushing along the hedges at the same time. We found a junction, followed the satnav again, did about 10 more miles, and then found ourselves on the same country lane again. We went round about three times in all. Cheeky pixies. Either that or stupid satnav.

        Trees with heavy crops of berries may mean a bad winter. Apparently to supply birds with food. :)

        Rostherne mere, I read on the net that the church bell fell from its tower and down the hill into the water. Apparently a mermaid rings the bell tower every Easter morning from under the water and sings songs every Easter morning :D ...could be true....

        So stuff like this then?

        Onion skin, very thin
        Mild winter coming in;
        Onion skin thick and tough,
        Coming winter cold and rough

        I knew this book I saw in a charity shop would come in handy one day (except the fertility rights bits might fall foul of the rules!). It took ages to find amongst all my other books.

          I've heard and read of many superstitions about hearing singing and bells ringing while underwater. The superstitions include that its the heavenly choirs getting ready for your arrival, or that its mermaids luring you in.

          I suspect the scientific theories are a bit more plausible, a combination of trapped air escaping from your ear holes, and hallucinations as your brain starts to become deprived of oxygen as you start to drown.

            Okay, so on reading this us cheeky Pixie's might dance round mushrooms and send cars in the wrong direction, but if i even heard something ringing, singing or dinging underneath the water i'd be calling on the fairies to get me out of there pretty fast!:runhills:

            When the rowantree has a lot of berries in Autumn there will be not much snow the following winter - and the opposite way, lots of snow after an autumn with no rowanberries!

            That's spooky, because there is a mature rowan on my land. It normally produces an abundance of berries, but the last two autumns there were none on it at all. In fact when I looked a couple of weeks ago, there were none this year either.

            The younger rowans keep producing berries though, perhaps being young, they are less experienced at weather forecasting. Or young and rebellious:heehee:

            Incidentally, there's a bit of old folklore about Rosemary, which is very silly and not at all true, but it goes like this:

            If the Rosemary thrives, it means it is the lady of the house that dominates. If the Rosemary struggles, then it is the man of the house that wears the trousers.
