:D OH has to spend a lot of time in Livingston at the moment. Home from home. He calls it 'the Medway of the North'.

Mind you, I can't fault Medway for friendliness. We're an inclusive bunch, used to taking in waifs and strays from all over the place. People are very chatty. When they're not head-butting you.

It's awful when you don't feel welcome in a new place, Lily. But I'm sure there are some friendly neighbours out there - it's just finding them that's the difficulty. If there are any local events, try to get along to them, even if you don't much feel like joining in. And until then, you can always chat to us!

Did you get your Rothmans, then, Ziggy? Or did they swear blind that you'd just ordered a bag of sheep droppings? :D I've had a few bad experiences as a Sais in North Wales, but I still love it and I've met some really lovely people. I'd rather take my chances in the least friendly of Welsh villages than in a remote hamlet in France, much as I like France and the French. :heehee: A few years back when a little English boy got swept away by flood water while he was on holiday in Conwy, many of the locals gave up their free time to help look for him. It said a lot for them, I thought.

What a shame Lily....dont give up, it sucks that no one will speak, but as some have mentioned, it could be that they have a hard time accepting "new comers'.

I'd just keep saying hi, and one of these days, someone will say hello back.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you for all your replies. I went out to bring the bins in today and said hello to the man across the street who spoke back. I commented on his garden which is beautiful so we had a five minute chat about gardens and he's told me there's allotments nearby :yahoo: What better way than making friends than on an allotment! I've emailed the Council as I think there will be a waiting list and am hoping to hear back soon. I've also applied for a few part time jobs as well as visiting the library to ask about volunteering opportunities, so I'm off the Volunteer Centre tomorrow to see what's available. I spied some lovely brambles while I was up the stables today so I'm going to make the most of those and make some bramble jam I also need to disinfect the green house, so plenty to keep me busy. Can I just say what a lovely bunch of people you are on here

          Hi

Looks like you have your work cut out already with all the pets.
If you have time what about voulantary work ???.

I worked with someone with the name West and his family moved in to a area in the South West that went down like a lead baloon .

That sounds like a conversation I'd have with my other half ha ha We show endearment in strange ways (so I'm told) :)

I may try sobbing tomorrow while out with the dogs and see if I get a reaction. :heehee: The neighbours will hopefully lighten up when the snow comes and they see me wellie skiing down the street trying to control two rather large black labs. They'll get a laugh if nothing else :)
