      the quickest way to make friends when moving to a new village is to go the the local pub .... everyone is inquisitive and will want to chat ... you will make a dozen new friends on the 1st night at the pub

      and after the 3rd night in the pub, the village will know more about you than what you know about yourself

      sounds like your neighbours may be elderly?...

      I found that the old folk in my street are not too freindly (especially if you speak with a foreign accent) ....

      my old neighbour still phones the police everytime I have a BBQ ... and I've been living here for 11 years ...

      she does not greet or speak .... she just occasionally nods her head (but from side to side) ...

      a good gardener though and I could learn loads from her.
