I had 3 children and, for a time there, there were always two of 'em in nappies, we couldn't have afforded disposable ones even if I'd wanted to use them.

I've got 8 compost bins in my garden so very little goes in my 'green' bin, consequently each time it's put out I get a terse pre-printed note from the Council informing me, in no uncertain terms, that I don't recycle enough - ironically, this 'note' is printed on a plastic self-adhesive thingy, plastic which my Council won't/can't/doesn't recycle!

I take my own bags to the supermarket - the same supermarket that has large signs outside saying things like 'Bring an old bag shopping', provides large containers in which to put your old plastic carriers but shrink-wraps things like swede (why??????) and, when I buy fresh and/or fish, always insists on wrapping it in two plastic bags '... in case one breaks'

The same Council which regards me as a social pariah for not recycling enough, does not provide any Council run refuse tip, so when enquiring of them what to do with an old TV, I was told to put it in my car and drive to a tip run by a neighbouring Council - the nearest of which means an 18 mile round trip. And this helps the environment ... how?

I am quite enjoying this thread but I must confess it was not my idea it was sent to me by sister-in-law.

We do try to re-cycle as much as possible and have a milkman deliver so we can wash and return bottles. I am pleased that I am now able to hang washing out, something I have not been able to do for more than a year while waiting for hip operation, so except for odd occasions tumble-dryer is mostly redundant and saves on electricity bills.

We don't have newspapers except for the weekly free one, as most news is on TV or local radio anyway.

Our car is used when we go to local supermarket as us old codgers can't walk very far and we couldn't carry heavy shopping home either. Oh for the days when we used to hop on our bikes at the weekends and cycle 20 miles or more to the coast just for fun!

The problem with that is Labour
Labour is so expensive now it is cheaper to ditch and buy new

I am old, I KEEP everything and repair, or at least make one good out of three broken
      The modern outlook is
To take broken garden forks. One the shaft and one the tangs, and make ONE good, would take me an hour, an hour of my time is worth £13, I can throw away and buy new for £11 no contest
THEY do not take into account, that this is leisure time not working time, so incorrect

A good thing to introduce instead of poly bags, is the OLD STRING BAG
fits into your pocket, with no bulk, and can carry loads of stuff
