This is typical of reports giving the wrong impression. An analysis of the report (as published in this article) shows that it is a load of nonsense. Of course, they may not have published the findings acurately in this report.

First of all, the incidence of E-coli (according to this article) is roughly one in a quarter of a million (and two thirds of those it says were mild cases). Then we need to look at the wording.

It talks about "Infected people were 40 times more likely to have been in a household where loose leeks were handled and 12 times more likely to have been in a household which bought sacked potatoes". I read this to be saying that they don't know the cause of the infection (otherwise they would have stated it) so they are only guessing.

"The vegetables could have carried traces of contaminated soil." Big deal - they could have also been radioactive :heehee:

"It is possible people caught the infection from cross-contamination in storage, inadequate washing of loose vegetables, insufficient hand washing after handling the vegetables or by failing to thoroughly clean kitchen equipment, utensils or surfaces after preparing the vegetables." Translation - anything could have caused it.

The rest of the article basically says to take normal precautions.

Me, cynical of the media - Never!!!! :loll::loll:

It just worries me that alot of kids wont eat proper food now adays and when their parents see a head line like that they will just pass by fresh food and moved to processed mush even more,
Surely these bugs are there in the soil but shouldn't us humans be immune to such things

There are bugs everywhere and we're not immune to all of them. It's just that blaming on the soil is stupid and we are still in the 'silly season'.

I don't think it will have much of an effect (if at all) for a number of reasons. The sort of people you are talking about are quite likely to already be using only processed foods. Most people that use fresh foods will recognise the article as the rubbish it is (they are, after all, already using common sense by buying fresh foods) - and how many people do you think actually bother to read such articles?

Well, if you have to take (supposedly) intelligent adults by the hand and tell them to wash vegetables then I do, finally, give up.

And as for it being a Tesco ploy? Well, quite possibly. My local Tesco has just undergone a 'makeover'. The homebaking section which previously covered both sides of one aisle now covers only half of one side and has been moved to the back of the store right in the corner. New, slightly smaller freezer cabinets, mean they've been able to squeeze in a whole extra aisle (with even less room to move between them), the beer now has 2 aisles all to itself (in addition to wines and spirits) and the crisps, snacks and other cr*p have an unbelievable 1½ aisles.

If they ever try to hand me another 'How to Eat Well' leaflet, I may just be tempted to stuff it somewhere Dame Shirley Porter never envisaged.

Same as ours a small section for "fresh" fruit and veg
1 isle for bottled water,a whole corner for sweets and crisps
i side isle for frozen mashed spuds/omletes and the like
A real struggle to find food ingredients
even the pet food isle is bigger than the food isle i dont include meat because we dont buy meat from there!

I do worry that one day we will be controlled by Tesco and that we will become some Orwellian style population where everything we buy is from Tesco. I read the other week that £1 in every £7 spent in the UK is spent in Tesco's and its not just food that they have monopolised. Perhaps its a sign of success but another view might just be that they are bullies who steamroller the independents into submission. Very sad imo

Two aisles of Beer ! :rolleyespink: So Tesco can do at least one thing right :dbgrtmb::D
When I was a nipper your choice was a packet of Smiths crisp , with the salt in a blue wrap, out of a big tin . Now the crisp aisle in Asda/Tesco is as long as the fresh veg aisle !

IMO unpoluted soil is as safe as houses, the truth is some people live such sterile lives that their immune systems soon won't cope with anything.
I am not ashamed to say that in my 59 years I have probably consumed a ton of soil working on the land and outside jobs and I am never ill other than a common cold.
So here I am living proof that soil is safe!!!

Ok lets look at this from another angle :heehee: for centuries humans eat raw meat and berries and anything else that they could and drank water from streams.then as time progresed and people moved from caves to houses they cooked stuff but the night soil (:WINK1:) was dumped where ever and the rivers were polluted and still mankind survived. So now with all the controls in place is the world a safer place or less safe food wise.:fingerdrum:
