Couldn't find a better board than this one, so does anybody make microwave crisps?

I've got a real glut of potatoes, and some Lakeland money off/free chocs vouchers, so thinking about getting one of these, not just for spuds, but also making fruit crisps such as pear & apple.

I've used one for years and very good it is too. They turn out like those expensive kettle chips only they are very healthy, I use the 1 Cal fat spray, heres mine - well used. They don't store too well, maybe a week in a plastic bag.

Yes thats the fat stuff I use, my instructions reckon you don't need any fat, but I've found a very light spray makes them go nice and brown.

I've occaisonally done beetroot and parsnip crisps which I like but the rest of the family think are too sweet. I've never thought about trying apple or pears, I wonder if they might be too watery to crisp up.

Parsnips are 79% water, spuds 80%, apples 84% and pears 83%. I've watched a youtube vid showing apple crisps being made in a microwave, so if fruits don't work from fresh, perhaps a kitchen towel to remove some moistiure, and if that doesn't work, lightly pre-dehydrating in an electric dehydrator prior to slicing and microwaving?

P.S. Beetroots have about as much sugar content as most soft fruits, and parsnips (after frosting) end up with around the same sugar content as eating apples.

I can't bear to use this stuff as in the States in the 70s my boss's son used to snort this stuff (it was a product called PAM then) and died aged 16 and I had iknown him since he was 4 or 5 and babysat he and his sister for years (in the daytime as my apartment had a pool and was a few block away from their home). He said his last wish was to find me again as I had lost touch with the family .. and he did .. when I read his obituary and was reunited with the family! :cry3:

I know it's healthy and all that but I still can't convince myself to buy it .....

But, I have done microwave crisps some 15 years ago ... with not a lot of success!

          Victoria, sorry to hear that.

I think you do need to use a little fat to be successful otherwise the potato slices just go all rubbery in the microwave instead of crisping up. I've wiped a little sunflower oil on them with kitchen roll when we ran out of the spray - that works too.
