I'm redesigning a Garden Kneeler!

Hi everybody, I am creating a product for my final year Product Design degree, and I've chosen a Garden Kneeler to re-design as gardening is one of my passions. I would love any insight into WHY people use them, and in as MUCH detail as possible what aspects of using the kneeler people have problems with. I am working for a client this year, so, you never know, you may help in the contribution to getting the product on the shelves, so dig deep! (bad pun). ALL suggestions welcome, many thanks all.

 

Something approximately in the shape of an oblong cushion, not too big, reasonably waterproof and stain resistant, but most important made of strong material because it has to withstand a lot of wear and tear.

 

I don't use one personally.
The only benefit may be the one with handles to help you to stand up.

The biggest problem, other than discomfort, is that if you are working a border you have to keep standing up to move it.

Stick it on rails and your on a winner!

 

I have some industrial knee-pads - not very elegant, but very functional !!

Was just going to say that Alex I have some gardening knee pads with velcro straps, much better than the kneeling pads, mine are bright purple.

I would rather have something I can sit on. Something easy to move, stable, compact, not too tall, and comfortable. Maybe something like one of those folding camp chairs without arms or a back. I have tried a 3 leg stool and they are no good. I don't kneel because I'd never get up once I got down.....

 

I can not see how you can improve on what is already out there


Light,Strong, Seat with liftup lid that holds a few garden hand tools and string, Flip it over and comfortable kneeling pad, Supports to raise yourself up using your arms

Why use them, well, you need something to kneel on, and something to sit on that is mobile and light, you need the supports to raise you back up again if you are frail or like me overweight, and just because of the weight it is raising it needs to be Strong
No point in making it in Dayglo colours, it will be just the same product, only extra cost than standard Green

There again if I had constructive ideas, I would have sat on me bum getting paid thousands in a warm office instead of working myself to death at the coal face/service industry :-)

I've seen those garden kneeler thingies, and to be honest I struggle to see the point of them.

I wear jeans and jumper that are ready for the wash, and my DM steelies, when gardening.

I tend to lay down as I work if its a fiddly job like weeding or planting young seedlings, just because I find kneeling and crouching causes me pain very quickly, but not on the bits that are on the floor, its just my joints don't seem to like being in that position.

I really don't mind getting clarted in mud, or wet through, so need need for anything between me and the soil except for my jeans and jumper, which are ready for the wash anyway when I wear them for gardening.

A kneeler is one extra thing I'd have to move about.

 

old lady next door sits on a low victorian foot stool, and always looks comfortable when gardening .... don't know her age, but she must be well over 80

have you considered boobs for knees?

You can get 'boob shaped' mouse pads designed to support your wrists while using a mouse/ typing. They have a gel filling, similar to the support you get inside soft bike saddles for people with broader backsides.

A kneeler filled with that gel would be very comfortable to use for long periods.
Nipples are probably optional.

You are "YOUNG" When you are young nothing will ever happen to you, then when you are Fifty or so you will meet all the old carpet fitters, service engineers, who when young thought knee pads were for cissies :-) as you all hoble around with arthritic knees
Kneelers apart from not looking as stupid as green knee pads, do the job, then when the job is done the old and infirm overweight people like me can actually get back up from the ground Without the aid of a FIREMAN under each arm :-)
