An acre of land to do what i like with???

Ok a friend of the family has just got some land and says I can plant anything I like :D I want to plant only native stuff but have not got a clue where to start yet
Have never done anything on this scale before any advice would be great. There is a listed tree on the site so won't be able to go near that I think It's an elm tree??

I'd be thinking about less common shrubs & trees, like Chequer Berry, Medlars, Wild Service Tree, Wild Pears & various edible nuts.

Also creating habitats for Insects with piles of old logs & a pond.

Good question Scrungee I forgot to say about animals already there lol there a few dogs, and a few chickens and a goat that sometimes have access to the area but there a plenty of other places for them to roam outside of the site they can go, other fields. It's kinda like a little farm about 5 minute walk from the river mersey. There are no deer though :(

Thanks Zig will look all of them up, I'm hoping to start as much of it as possible from seed as I won't be given a budget or payed in anyway so trying to keep cost down. Although if I can get the woodland trust to go halves with me then I would certainly buy a few trees for it.
Behind where I took the pic and a little to the side is just open field so there is much more light in that area the field gets narrower towards the bottom and weider at the top its like a pizza slice shape.
I think It's safe to say I have a good few months before I start planting anything though but will give me lots of time to plan.

 

There will be. It is unusual to see them though because they are shy, and also happen to be ninjas. They can hide in plain sight. My dad and I were on a bike ride through some woods once when he pointed out a deer he'd spotted at the side of the track just ahead. I looked and looked but couldn't see it. Then it moved and I spotted it. Then about half of dozen of them all ran off from that spot. So my dad had somehow seen one in the group, but not the rest of the group. When I spotted one, after staring for ages, I too failed to see the others that were standing right next to it in plain view.

Whatever you plant, make sure your plants/trees are well protected.

Save yourself some money by finding out where your nearest big farmer's auction happens. They are open to the public so no worries about trade cards or anything, and you'll often find everything you need there at a fraction of the price you'd pay to a retailer.

I will keep my eyes peeled clueless then lol I think the dogs would scare them away. I walked past a bull once without spotting it just because was not moving :D and a swan. On different walks like. Lol

 

One word......WOW..

 

Shop around, and work out how many trees you can plant, then look again at the prices. As with most things, the price per unit drops as the order size increases. It works out that you can get 100 trees for not much more than the price of 20.

I couple of years ago I got 100 trees for about £50 including delivery. I got a 50/50 mix of hazel and crab apple.

Dont overlook protectors. I did, and ALL my new trees got chewed up. Granted most of them made a miraculous recovery, regrowing from the roots, but they were certainly set back. I got about 200 large tree guards from the farmers auction for £40. They were big enough to be cut into two or three each so I ended up with 500 plus tree guards for £40. The auctions are best, you can't get deals like that online.

 

That's my local garden centre who run that well known mail order business and where I've bought trees from in person, all very good quality and the mail order section staff are extremely knowledgeable - I've been in the office and heard them advising customers on the phone. (Also where where my hens came from).

Haha small world I'm glad you said that because at first, when I looked at the prices I thought it was a little to good to be true. I will give them a call today maybe and have a chat. It says on their website we are approaching the best time of year to send the bare roots out or transplants.
Having done a little homework now I think the most costly part of the job will be materials to build little fences around the new trees so the single goat does not eat them. Maybe I could get my hens from there too :D

 

Hey guess what. I didn't know what a Coypu was, or even if it was a real word so I put it into google. Having determined its a type of rat thing, I put Cleveland Coypu in and this very thread came up as the very top result.

Given that you only wrote it about 13 hours ago, and that Cleveland and Coypu get so many hits independently, it can only mean that the almighty all-knowing omnipotent Google has considered this forum to be a very important site.

Wow I am jealous of that! So many trees and plants you can grow in that beauty!! Our garden's not so big since the wife insisted we install an office there so she can work from home but I'm ready to decorate it with plants next summer. Wish ours was as big as yours!

 

Hi folks.
I am going to order some trees from this company any day now. They sell a native tree collection for ten pounds; 1 oak, 1 field maple, 1 ash, 1 mountain ash and 1 wild cherry tree. All 4 - 5 foot tall. I think they should all be ok for the spot. BUT, if I pay an extra ten pounds they will send "1.2 meter heavy duty tree shields" for each tree. Do you think this is worth it if the tree is already 4 - 5 foot tall?? Or does it still need a shelter anyway there is only one goat that has access to the field. Any advice would great. If I don't need the stands I can get twice as many trees for same price :D
