I'm pretty sure both Libya and Iraq are both Oil based decisions by western governments.
But when you actually look at it, those countries have done very well from the oil industry, the fact that the dictators running the countries do not pass on the wealth to the people is not our fault.

If it wasn't for western countries the oil would still be in the ground, and those countries would be poorer than they are now.

Its the same old story, we buy the stuff then condemn our government for supplying it, and making it available to us.
Bit like child labour in China etc.

Anyone that wants to get by without a car can take the high moral ground, but if you drive, or even take the bus.
    You are a hypocrite :D

Exactly. No mercy shown to Gaddafi, dragged along, abused, beaten then shot in the head!!! Difference between them and him? None!!!

another one who amazes me is Donald Rumsfeld .... he's been around for 100 years, is always involved in whatever's happening and seems to be getting younger every year?

I'm sure he has some secret medicine such as the 'fountain of youth' that has not been disclosed to the public (he is heavily involved in the pharmeucitical industry)

but then again, for the past several years, Simon Cowells teeth seems to get whiter every year (and I still have the same TV and the same TV aerial and the same eyes)??

I don't think they are animals at all. Most the frontline fighters were victims of him. Sisters and daughters raped brothers tortured and murdered all to keep him that in spot of power. Plus all there friends dying in battle. How else did he expect it to go?

Because Mugabe was supposed to be the good guy, as opposed to that nasty Ian Smith. Unfortunately he's proved himself to be just another tin pot tyrant, but I doubt anyone in the West will ever take him on. I just hope he keels over before he gets even more bonkers.

In principal, I agree. However I'm also aware that the way we reckon we'd handle things, from the comfort of our safe homes, is probably not the same as how we actually would handle things if we were caught up in it all.

If I'd spent all my life living in fear, and the last several months of my life in even deeper fear and actually engaged in battle where there are people actually trying to kill me for real, and I'd seen my friends and family killed, my reaction to seeing the top man of the dictatorship standing in front of me might not be the same as the reaction I like to think I'd have.

I know it was a rather different situation, but did you feel the same about Osama Bin Laden, Val? Because I have to admit that I'm hugely relieved that he isn't under permanent guard with nothing to do but whinge about his Yuman Rites while some interminable and ineffectual trial chunters on for umpteen years.

The problem with Osama Bin Laden is that there are now numerous conspiracy theories saying he isn't really dead at all!!! So yes, I think to stand trial is probably the best way.

He was given plenty of time to surrender or give up power but he wanted to be a marter. He said so himself. It was nobody else's fault but his own. How could we have stopped that without fighting the ground war for them too? I think the world shpuld give them a break and join in the celebration.

To be frank, I think that if they'd killed him following a trial, the hard core loony tunes would simply have claimed that he'd risen from the dead and had now become a sort of indestructible Islamic terminator. And what would they have done with his body? Anything other than ditching him into the sea would have made it the focus of all kinds of cults. Worse still, he might have been kept in comfort for the rest of his natural.

Trials are lovely but the entire time he is on trial the fighting would go on and more people die. It best this way I think.

Once you let the courts and lawyers take over its takes years to sort things out. Afterall they need to make a few quid and delay things as long as possible.

Lets face it, its not a case of did he do it, or did he not, in these cases.

We know its him so why bother.

Its better for all concerned, including Gadaffi.
