Winter Aviary/birdroom

My aviary is looking fine in the summer months,but after last year I decided to clad it against the cold winds and frosts.It will take about an hour in the spring to remove and store the cladding, but I feel a lot happier knowing the birds are snug.

beautiful! Do they manage to go through the winter withouth heating or how do they have a heated area?

 

They are acclimatised to our weather,although I would prefer they sleep in the insulated section which has a small heater in to take the edge off the cold...

I insulated half in the early days with our winters in mind...




A lot insist on roosting in the open area where last year it dropped to below freezing on many occasions.The warmer area is there if they want to use it.

The ideal would be room temperature throughout,but that's not possible with the cost nowadays.

Just one thought though, will they be alright with ammonia build up with the reduced ventilation?

 

Brings back memories. Lovely to see them! Raebhoop I think I told you my mum used to breed foreign birds, mainly parrakeets.

Ziggy, you don't really get an ammonia build up, particularly if the roost area is kept clean. It's not like keeping larger birds. My brother has racing pigeons and the smell from their roosting area can be choking and they are cleaned out every day!

 

Love these birds Rae especially the Diamond Doves and what looks like Chinese Painted Quails?on eggs

I used to keep and breed Budgerigars many years ago and also had some Zebra Finches but never bred from them just the budgies:D

Would it be possible for you to put up the names of some of the other birds as I find them all interesting but don't know what they are :D

 

I can see some nice plump Hecks!! Gouldians, Bourkes? Very nice!!

compaired to myna birds those little birdies make no mess at all. The mynas are charming birds but they do certainly keep you busy cleaning after them.

 

Hi I have a 9foot by 12 foot aviary and would like to clad it for this winter. Did you make up glazed units?
Any tips on how to construct most welcome.
