I've decided to invest in an outside thermometer, just something basic. Does anyone have any recommendations on make/type please. :)

I've got an Oregon Scientific wireless thermometer, it has a couple of battery powered sensors, so I check the temps in my greenhouse from the lounge. The max/min feature is most useful (for me), I could't do without it.

I've got similar to John, but I also have a Max/ min thermometer in the same position.
The Oregon one is a right problem to get the Max and Min out of it.

The sensor and the thermometer are sited under the eves of the shed facing north, so no sun at any time of the year.

A thermometer in sunshine is a complete waste of time.

I've got an Oregon Scientific weather station, so I not only know the outside temp, wind speed, etc., but can also check if it's raining outside without even having to look out the window, simply by logging on to my laptop. Alternatively I can look out of the window (where there's a thermometer on the wall).

I think Oregon Scientific are the best make, but that means expensive. I got mine off ebay, just after Christmas a few years ago, it was an unwanted gift so I got it for half price, £30.

I've got my wall mounted one tucked up against the north side of a rainwater hopper where it's illuminated by an outside light and I can see it from my lounge window as I type this post.

I got my traditional mercury max-min thermometer in France about 5 years ago it was €1.90 . Wish I had bought a dozen - as they sell for around £10 here. I also have a teracotta garden thermometer which continually reminds you of what a miserable summer you are having . Don't buy a cheap electronic one they seem to have a very short life. For my money the mercury max-min is pretty good value , I would not be without mine

                Bringing this back to life,
Thermometers have an important place in the gardeners life now.
I have just bought a max/min one for the greenhouse for about £6 and it has shown me how the house can offer a good degree of protection to plants.
Over night temps dropped to -6deg C outside, but the house gave a temp of -2deg C.
At present this is -3 outside and 0 deg.

I got an "Auriol" wireless one from Aldi a couple of years ago and it's very good for what I paid (can't recollect the price but it couldn't have been much). Gives outdoor/indoor temp, barometer, indoor humidity, sun & moon rise and set and barometric trend.

I have the electrical/ remote sensor type of thermometer, one sensor in the greenhouse and one out in the garden.
I find quite often that just when I need it, ie. the coldest nights, the outside sensor gets "lost".,and the display just shows dashes.
I've renewed the batteries but its still the same.

I also have a very accurate mercury thermometer on a wall facing North, but I have trouble reading it these days without my glasses, so was thinking of buying one of those really large outdoor dial types, but I have reservations on how accurate they are.

                Any thoughts?
