I just dug up my few remaining carrots. They were the runts that got left behind. On getting them ready for cooking I found that there were many holes and hollows in the sides. I have noticed that I seem to have a lot of under surface slugs in my patch. What is the best treatment to clear the ground or am I hoping for too much? I am expecting to find similar damage in the parsnips when I start pulling them.

    Thanks

This mild damp weather is perfect for slugs, I've hardly noticed any all summer but they are back with a vengance now. There's not a lot you can do about underground slugs, when the freezing weather eventually arrives they will retreat. Fingers crossed for your parsnips.

The slugs got ALL my carrots months ago, my parsnips are looking unwell, so I suspect they've got to them too, gonna use nematodes next year!

A Mk II Pineapple fragmentation grenade should do the job.

I've still got plenty of carrots in the ground and yes, mine are being nibbled too. The slugs are very tiny and I'm never sure if they're a different type or just baby slugs feeding on my veg to grow big and strong for next year.

Like JWK says, there's really not a lot you can do but it makes me wonder how commercial growers can produce perfect carrots all year round. On the other hand, perhaps it's better not to know.....
