I've been asked allot this year what I want for Christmas (lucky me:D) and I've decided that if I'm asked then I will suggest a good bottle of aged rum:coffee: what I want to know is would you consider it rude to say what price they should be looking to spend on aforementioned bottle of the good stuff?

the reason I ask is there are some huge price differences between the same bottle of rum depending on where you go to find it (a £20 bottle of rum could be sold at almost double the price at a different shop:rolleyespink:)

    many thanks:thumbsup:

What a wise choice. You can't beat good rum, but bad rum should be used only as toilet cleaner.

Unlike many popular spirits, the name 'rum' isn't (as far as I know) protected. Whiskey for example is protected by law and has to be wheat based spirit aged for a minimum of 8 years, and I think there's some legality between Brandy and Cognac in a similar way. Rum just has to be sugar cane based spirit (as far as I know).

What this means is that unlike whiskey, smaller producers can sell drinks labelled as rum without jumping through as many hoops to satisfy the law, which means you can get a darned good bottle of rum for a good price.

I've had a fine bottle of liquid sugar cane for under a tenner once (never seen it again unfortunately).

My point is, unless you have a specific brand in mind, price doesn't really come into it with rum like it does with the likes of whisky or brandy. If it was me, the criteria would be: Don't buy the big name mass produced filth (mentioning no names, but something like Skipper or Admiral Gorman, Sheeps Navy or Back Cardigan - all big name rubbish).

But to answer your original question, it depends how you word it. If you drop lots of hints that the price of what you is ??? then no problem. If you say "don't buy it unless its more than ???" then that would be a bit cheeky. I reckon in this day and age, for most people, a £50 limit is reasonable for your main pressie, but it really comes down to what people can afford.

Just ask for it by name...... if you wanted something specific for your garden you wouldn't just ask for "a plant." You would say I'd like a Black Tulip magnolia tree....... The prices on those bottles of rum aren't making ME collapse and hyperventilate so they aren't THAT expensive. Plus it's not like you're going to open it and glog the whole thing down in one go. I guess it DOES depend on who's doing the asking a bit. If it's someone you know well then just tell them!

Suggestion - think of two things, then say - 'I'd love a bottle of aged rum, although the one I'd really like is a bit expensive £** [insert price], so perhaps xxx instead?'.

Failing that, if it's family members who are asking, just come right out with it, tell them the price and suggest two or three of them club together.

Get them to hand over some cash. Then they can give what they like and you can get what you really want.

I don't think I can scarcely imagine drinking something which costs £30 a glass:rolleyespink: but I'm sure it tastes fantastic :D I presume that it's considerably cheaper in Jamaica as well?

Your thread reminds me of something that happened to me fairly recently, Aesculus :D

I was asked what i'd do if i had "a big lottery win" so i replied, in all honesty and sincerity, .... "i'd pay off my morgage, renew my car and buy a gold Rolex".

As i was saying it the other persons face changed and when i'd finished they were stunned - their reply was ..... "blimey, i expected you to say you'd book a flash holiday".

The point here being that we all have very different ideas of what's expensive and what's not :D
This person thought a few thou was a lot, whereas i was thinking in the millions :D :heehee:

I think you're best to ask of the thing by name and be very specific - even better write it down !
If the place you like to buy your 'goods' from has a website and a wishlist use that facility - i've done this before and it's a really good route to go !

Fabulous idea. You can get them to hand over a couple of tenners, you can bung them 4 grubby fivers, then everyone can settle back and enjoy the solstice knowing their festive duty has been fulfilled to the max.

On the subject of rum, I used to enjoy a Dominican brand called Barcelo Anejo. Common as muck over there, a little bit exotic over here. Perfect for downing with lime and ice, or with Coca Cola if you're chicken.

                  Been there too Louise.. :D

 Yes Aesculus, when I ask mu nephews, neices & grandkids what they want I tell them all to be specific & if they know where to get it to tell me... That way they get what they wanted, not my interpretation of what they want... Also my effort is not wasted, it is appreciated.. I think once you stop believing in Father Xmas & make it to adulthood that sort of thing is allowed in our family... :heehee:

I don't consider it extremely rude, but it kind of put a little pressure on the person, like to say that you really expect to get the bottle...

Maybe you could mention in a conversation that a certain shop sells the same product for so and so much more and it is a rip off...
