My six year old pocket camera is about to give up the ghost, so Friday I invested in a 'proper' camera, the Canon 1100d. It was my son's suggestion as a gentle step up from my old one. Has anyone any experience of this camera, feedback would be welcome please. :)

Will do Armandii, I've got as far as charging the battery since Friday. I haven't had time to sit down and play with it yet. :)

Hi Sheal IMHO you have made an excellent choice,I have had the pleasure of using one for a day,and found it to be an excellent DSLR,its got a new 12Mp CMOS sensor, and its got a Canon's DIGIC 4 processing chip, Canon's iFCL 63-zone metering system and it has an improved 9 point focusing system, sorry I am going on a bit,I just love cameras almost as much as Roses:heehee:great camera in my opinion Sheal, hope this helps :)

Thanks very much Woo. :) Although you've just blinded me with science, I take it I've made a good choice. I hope to get some 'play time' in tomorrow. I'm not very good with technology, so it will take me a while to get my head round it. There may be some questions coming your way in the near future, if you would be so kind to help me out please. :)

        Thanks Woo, :)

After a couple of hours of study I took a stroll round the village this afternoon, weather was beautiful. I decided to shoot with the camera set on automatic just to get the feel of things. I took some good shots but the pictures turned out to be massive when I got them onto the computer so adjustments need to be made. :)

Back to the manual tomorrow, to sort this problem and a couple of others.

Thats not your camera you need to adjust, you need to use the software CD and manipulate the pix on there
(Well you CAN adjust the camera to take JPEG instead of RAW Though it is best to shoot RAW and use software to process it to what you want)

Jack's correct Sheal. If you use the Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional) software that came with your camera you can very easily edit your images. You can resize, crop, adjust exposure, colour balance, sharpness etc.

        Thanks Jack and Dave,

I hadn't looked at the discs as I find it easier to take things in reading, but I will give them a go tomorrow.

Sheal, Canon USA has some excellent on-line video tutorials on the use of Canon DPP and DPP for RAW processing. I've not used the current release of the tutorials but I used an earlier version about 4 years ago and found them very useful.
For some reason Canon doesn't mention the tutorial site in the literature that comes with the camera and the tutorials can only (as far as know) be found on Canon's USA site.

          Hi Sheal :)

I bought the 1000d last year and it is marvellous, obviously the 1100d is the upgrade and will have more features. I am still learning how to use it in different modes and I never use auto anymore. Coupled with the software that came with it you really can create some great images, as Jack said, raw is the best format to use. I also got a copy of Elements 10 for £29.97 during Amazon black Friday week, can't wait to get my hands on that.

I used this site a lot when I first got my camera, not a technical site but a useful practical advice site which I still refer to.

Well I still haven't had a chance to load the discs I got with my new Canon. It's horrible having a new toy and not having the time to play with it. Just a couple of hours out wih it so far to get the feel.

Attached a couple of pics for anyone interested to have a look. Took these on my 'dying' pocket camera!

The Canon is very comfortable to handle and not too heavy which I found with others. Mind you a better longer range lens in the future will probably add a litle extra weight to it. So far, so good! :)

Standard "kit-lens" on that, the 18-55mm. Bloomin good lens and around 80-90% of my photography is with that lens.

One thing you should know is that when you shoot in "Auto" mode, the camera controls you, that's fine and you'll get great shots, BUt take it out of "Auto" and put it into "Manual, TV or AV" and you will win back the control and with a little bit of knowledge you'll soon be taking very creative photographs.

When you want to do that, give me a shout and I'll be able to help you learn easily.

            Steve...:)
