    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thread previously called: "Anyone Good at Aquarium Plants?" located in the ID section

I've renamed it and moved it here to "Pets Corner" as I'm going to make it into a general thread about my Axolotl tank and update it regularly:thumbsup:

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I ordered some plants/cuttings from eBay for my new Axolotl tank but I don't know what they are or what conditions they will like or even where I should plant them in the tank (back, middle, front)

This is a somewhat list of the plants they send and I specifically asked for low light plants as obviously there's no light in my tank (going to be an axolotl tank)...

I realise I'm asking allot with some of these photo's but even rough guesses even on how to plant would be nice:o

    I think they are

    No1 bacopa
    No2 Ergeria
    No3 Hygrophylla Polysperma
    No4 Cryptocorine spp
    No5 Ergeria
    No6 Vallisneria
Not sure these will thrive in a low light tank and as Axolotl are such messy and aggressive creatures they may destroy the plants, I hope not!:)

Thanks Strongy I will start the goggling now:thumbsup: from what I understand some axolotl like to destroy plants and uproot them and others seem perfectly content with them:what:

well I say low light but I do have two windows in bedroom like this

      Not to scale:heehee:
so I could move it closer to one of the windows if needs be:what:

I have Crypts in my tropical tank and they eventually spread across the substrate but that is heated to 78f, Hygro grew very well too and Vallis not so well, I have two 24" 25w sunglow and Aquaglow tubes so it is very bright.

Post a pic of your set up when complete.:)

Well I've planted it up and to be honest I'm not sure how the plants are going to stay in the substrate... I might have to tie them onto suckers or something and then stick them to the glass underneath:o it looks a bit crowded but I'm presuming that not all of them are going to like it and there might be casualties

as to the Vallisneria I'm told on another forum (multi threads:D) that it's probably Sagittara subulata as the leaves aren't twisted:dunno: I've currently got a rather large Eheim internal filter which I'm using to cycle the tank and then I'm going to switch to a couple of smaller sponge filters (over a month or so) running off an air pump

      Thanks Strongy:dbgrtmb:

PS: will post picks once I've charged the digicam:)

Here's a couple of hastily taken picks:o I've also reburied the plants which have come slightly loose:thumbsup: oh and the big plants at the back are the backing poster:heehee: which is soon to be replaced with a river scene

It looks good already:dbgrtmb:. Hope it keeps that clear.
As you not getting much light algae shouldn't be a problem.:)

Well I've reconsidered the light option and come to the conclusion that I will just stick extra hides in for the Axi:heehee: so I've currently got an old 15w T8 in (until I can spare £15 for a new bulb:o) but I don't know if that is enough:scratch: the water is only 11" deep and then the light is 7" above that and the tank is 30" long and 12" deep

I'm a bit worried about how much running one of these for 9hrs a day will cost though:dunno:

I reckon a 15w will be enough and not much to run, I presume it is not heated so no cost there. If the plants don't grow then maybe a stronger one is needed but the Axis' are more important than the living plants.
I guess it's a case of suck it and see!:)

I've added 5ppm of Ammonia too the tank and it's been running for about two weeks to build up ammonia converting bacteria and I got a nitrite reading a few days ago:) it's still only part way through as the ammonia hasn't yet dropped to zero and I'm also waiting for the nitrite to start dropping

anyone got a current price of kwh from their British Gas electric bill?

Well I think I've found a company who will deliver a 15w T8 Daylight bulb (6500 K) for a few pennies over £8 which is the cheapest I've seen by about £4

looks like I'll be getting it sooner than I thought:thumbsup: oh and I worked out a monthly electricity cost of about 95p for the light:hapfeet:

Ah, you're doing a fishless cycle, have you done this before? sounds very tricky to me!! when the nitrite starts getting converted you will need more ammonia to feed the first bacteria.

Incidentally, have you used real plants before? if not be prepared for the snails you'll have millions of them, that is the one big drawback of real plants I think.
Sorry I love my aquatics, can't resist getting involved, I'll buzz off now!! :heehee:
