    Hi All,

We have an open fire and so every weekend I have to clear the ash which is normally a good bucket full. I remember from the dim and distant past my Dad sprinkling it over the flower beds. I know its rich in potash sooooo is it safe to add it to the base of plants or is it better to add it to composter? I do remember a thread recently (one of my other silly questions) where it was mentionned that ash was no good once it was wet?

    Many thanks,

    MrM

I would spread it on the borders, MrM, as it will do good. Regarding the saying about wet ash being no good when wet, I don't hold to it as reality says that as soon as you put ash on the border it's bound to rain anyway so why bother as it will become ineffectual:dunno::D:heehee: At the very least it will add humus and that's all to the good.

Dai pointed out in an earlier thread that Potash is water soluble so probably best saved for when the plants are actively growing as a feed.

grass goes deep green when the ashes are added ... not sure if now is the right time to spred it on though ... and not sure if it is good to add to the lawn if you don't have enough to cover the whole lawn in 1 go (you will hve dark green patches)

    Ah yes,

I have a lawn like that already. MrsM fed the lawn with fertiliser in the summer but MrsM doesn't do anything steady or particularly read instructions so we have a very well-fed lawn, in patches. I think she fed it by hand whilst marching at a similar pace to 2nd Battalion Light Infantry and dropping a few handfuls every 12th pace!

The result was 'messy' -still I suppose I could just now go and dump wood ash on the malnourished patches, at least their easy to spot :WINK1:
