Viscum album

I've seen enoooormous clumps of this in several trees (in several locations) over the past month and started wondering this ........

As it's growing in trees which are situated on the edge of farmland -specifically trees within hedgerows that are dangerously close to roadsides - what's to stop any Tom, Dick or Harry from putting up a frame/(tall) ladder/whatever and raiding it .... then selling it to whoever for whatever etc. etc. ?
Who would be able to stop it ? !
It seems wrong.

It's not public property, it technically belongs to the farmers that own the land but ...... who/how is this protected ?

 

Good old Mistletoe

None grow round here and to be honest have only saw one or two plants in South Wales , and one of them grows at the top of a Popular tree .

I see your point belonging to the farmer , but what about blackberries , Elder flowers, which people go out and collect and other things you can eat from hedgerows that belong to somone.

When I was little me and my brother and local kids used to pick holly and sell localy to the posh houses about a mile away at xmas time and it was a good little earner ££ but that was on a small scale .

Yes, that also was in my mind - blackberries etc.
Mistletoe costs a fortune round here at xmas, several pounds for the smallest of sprigs !
A person could make a fortune !

Working on a Church on the levels some years ago, turned up one monday morning to find most of the Mistletoe gone & bits of it dropped all over the place.

Not blaming any particular group of people but the locals said they were driving a flat bed truck.

Another thing that annoys me is when someone tries to sell me "Lucky Heather" that is about as closely related to Heather as Armandii is related to a Badger - Not at all.:gaagh:

I slit the bark on my Apple Tree & slid some seeds under it.

About 3 years later I noticed it had worked.
