Clianthus advice

A few weeks ago our local "very expensive garden centre" had an end of season sale. I left with two Clianthus puniceus (red and white forms) which were near two metres in height. At three quid each I had to snap them up!

As it looks as if I'm moving Feb/March time they are in bigger pots now and will be in the garage for the worst of the winter.

At what sort of temperature will they need protecting?

 

Back in the mild winters I was growing this on a fence with no problem.

Not managed to get it going again now for about three years or so.

Is the garage dark, as the plants really need full light in winter.



If in pots I would say 0C as an absolute minimum.

I think you grabbed a good bargain there BTW.

There is a south facing glass door. Not as good as a green house, but didn't drop below freezing last winter, and they'll be huddled up around the air brick from the house. They took the other nights frost well enough, but that was not one of the deep ones was it.
Everything in the garage stands on a pile of newspapers.

Reduced from £18.99 each and British grown - had to be had!
Had a Bletilla striatta for £3.00 too - I was stood there tipping them out of the pots (carefully) to find the one with the most offsets.

 

is it called lobster claw plant as this also died last spring mine was a half standard I was gutted I have the label I will have a look as it was meant to be a unsual variety but they said down to minus somthing but our winter was just to hard the only good thing was I had empty spaces to fill all over the garden
I used to have loads of Cannas as well until a virus killed off the lot of them , gardening can deffo have a dark side at times and as you are new on here over 25 agapanthus varieties and now I have 3 !!!

I got off fairly lightly last winter all things considered..........
I lost my Diplarrhena latifolia though which was pretty annoying.
