Take the hard drive out dim & try it in another machine.. Blue Screen is called Death..!
It is hopefully the computer it'self, so if you can take the hard drive out & put it in another pc you will hopefully be OK & not lost all your files etc.. Hope that helps mate..

...you mean: "I should have had" backed up some files...

I hope it is not a Packard Bell which has a special setup designed to squeeze money out of the users whilst the technician spends half an hour with you on the telephone.

however, it's time for a new one (mine is an old Dell) and has served me well ... bought it 5 years ago (2nd hand)

it's time for a super quick laptop now (not new but will look for something 2-3 yrs old)

I would never buy a 2nd hand laptop
They are expensive to repair and often "wear out" in around 3 years.
Any repairs you do have done often cost a small fortune.

most of my stuff is backed up, but my favourites list has not been backed up ... I also have a database that I created in micrisoft access that i don't want to redo from scratch

hopefully he will sort it ... i don't think the hard drive is bad, just windows has crashed .... my A drive does not work, and tried booting with a boot disk using an external rom drive, but its not working ...

the message that pops up says we need to disable the antivirus etc but it does not allow you to get access to c drive

      I say bring back DOS!

Something similar happened to me once and a chap said he'd sort it out for me. He re-formatted the drive which meant everything on it was gone!

      Just saying ...........

Hi *Dim* you will be able to view what's on the drive if you do one of two things

        1. Connect the hard drive to a second PC either by plugging it in to the motherboard the standard way or putting it into an external USB enclosure or dock like this which usually set you back about £10-£15 online
          [IMG]
        2. or you can download and burn a Linux Live CD which will allow you to view all your files on the drive and then copy them over to a usb thumb drive or similar

of course both these options presume that the data on the drive is in fact intact...

Basically I won't go into the details of what Linux is as you don't really need to know other then it can help and it's FREE but basically it will allow you to recover files from your windows installation without effecting it in anyway:thumbsup:

if your friend cannot help then download a copy of Ubuntu Linux from here

        Download | Ubuntu

put it on a disc by following the helpful guides and then run it on your dell it should automatically find your windows drive and then you can browse through it and selectively copy the files/folders onto A usb stick:dbgrtmb:

Take the hard drive out and put it as a second drive into the pc you are posting this on
Find and save the files you want kept to the main drive or USB stick

Just as a BTW - I bought a new computer 2 weeks ago. With only minor exceptions, all my files have been produced using MSOffice - no probs., you may think, 'cept of course, my version of Office doesn't work with Windows 7, even the wretched 'compatibility' thingy doesn't help and now Microsoft think they're going to screw £375 out of me for the new version.:mad:
