Not exactly a gardening topic but if any of you like fresh mango, take a trip to Asda. Right now they have giant mangoes for sale for £2 online but in the shop I've been paying about £1.67. They weigh in at 2lbs each and are delicious! Compared to a similar weight of smaller melons you get heaps of lovely mango flesh!

I only ever buy mangos from the bargain bins! I find it bizarre that they reduce them just as they are edible!!
Spent a few months in Malaysia/Thailand in my younger days - hard to beat the taste of truly fresh mango..........

I lived in zambia during my childhood .... mangoes grew wild there ... same as in south africa (in certain parts)

however, a big difference in taste between those ripened on the tree and those that have been picked green, then ripened on the shelf (much like a tomato)

a lot of exporters of fruit and veg pick the fruit during the growing season .... pick them when they are 'green' .... refrigerate them until it's out of season and then sell them at twice the cost, but they never taste the same

one of the biggest taste difference to me is a banana that has ripened on the tree versus those sold in supermarkets (total different taste)

In my opinion, best fruit/veg is from farmers markets or M&S (even M&S tomatoes taste better than tesco finest)

here in East London we have Turkish shops which sell excellent fruit and vegetables and ripe most of the times. If you buy it in the supermarkets it is not generally ripe. It must be not in demand.

Having said that, there are exceptions from time to time, for example the other day I bought some pomegranates for £1 each in Sainsbury's and they were big/beautiful/ripe and tasty.

I also want to mention that I bought a little bag of pumpkin seeds without the shell which I eat as a snack and I am very pleased with.

I usually do a fair bit of shopping up the Cowley Rd. in Oxford when I'm there - Indian, Moroccan, etc. Tends to be a lot cheaper too.
The better s/market for fruit seems to be Lidl strangely.
