    Hi longk,

I'm totally ignorant on these technical matters but if the photos had been copied from a newspaper wouldn't they be devoid of technical data?

When photos are resized for web use, unless you use the "save as" command then exif data will be lost, if you use other commands such as "Save" or "Save for web" then exif data will be stripped, this is fairly normal as it reduces filesize by a few kb's and also it varies across many software packages too. Besides, it's fairly easy to falsify exif data if one wanted to do that and had the programs and knowledge to do so.

Easiest way to check if a photo is faked is to zoom into the shot at pixel depth and look for tonal shifts and anonalies, these too can be hidden if you know what your doing but there are other indications to look for far too technical for explaining here.

If you were looking at the photos that I posted then they are, at least, third hand. I copied it from something someone sent me and they probably copied it from elsewhere. Mine had been reduced down to less than 100kb so I guess there wouldn't be much info.

With regard to being a nutcase to have done it:- that's exactly what I think but we all (well, maybe, a lot of us) did stupid things when we were younger. None of mine were as dangerous as that but, looking back, some of them were pretty dangerous. I even got arrested for one of them! :rolleyespink:

"In the write up that I took the photos from..............."

      Doh!
      That'll teach me to be a smart@ss!!

I use Irfanview for cropping, and the EXIF is saved however I save it.
I can always read it off of the photos on another forum too.

If you use "Save for Web (Plugin)" from within Irfanview, it'll optimise the image, thereby trashing your exif as part of it's optimisation.

However, if you use the "Save for Web (Plugin)" feature within Irfanview then select the tools from menu bar, then the "Riot" plugin tab you can check a box to save all ancillary date such as XML ICC proifile etc etc.

But other than that, using the "Save As" command is the guarantee of saving exif date (keeping intact) from a photo, this is how graphics programs are made and all follow a similar route to save confusion among users.
