Hi all, I have just bought a couple of these grasses in pots. I will plant them out in the spring. Do you cut the old growth down now or leave until they are planted ?

I'd cut the old growth down by half now and do the rest when new growth starts up in Spring.

Thanks, I'll reduce the dead growth down a bit. I'm looking forward to seeing them grow next year.

Generally you cut back in spring when the new growth starts to show. Cut back to about 8" 200 mm. Some miscanthus can remain over winter and stand up well to the winter weather adding height and form in the garden. I like Miscanthus kleine Silberspinne which has good foliage and impressive flowers in August and holds them through the winter. In November the foliage changes colour and with a low sun shining through the seed heads it makes a great statement in any garden. I included this as my November plant of the month on my website for this reason.
