It's not the same stuff any more, unfortunately. OH was instrumental in getting the original banned. I hate him sometimes.

Does anyone else remember 'Famel' cough syrup?
Haven't seen it for years, so I assume it's been banned.
I must have got through pints of the stuff as a boy, my parents always reached for the Famel bottle whenever I had a cold or a cough. It tasted good too, so I never needed any persuading to take it.
Apparently the ingredients included Codeine and Creosote, no wonder it worked so well on chesty coughs!

we used to have stuff called Borstol .... they still sell it in south africa ....tastes of garlic and diesel ....

my mom always had a few bottles in the house .... and she had a 'heavy hand' ... no teaspoon measures .... cough, and you get a glug of 1/4 bottle

I was too scared to cough in my house

we also had some vile medicine called milk of magnesia in a deep blue bottle .... tasted like chalk, and was supposed to sort your stomach ... I never ever told my mom I had stomach cramps

My mother used to use Reckitts Blue Bags in the washing, also she used them to soothe wasp stings. I don't think they are banned, just no longer available.

What about Cosylan Cough mixture.. I remember being very disappointed when it was banned as it made you sleep.. Not surprising really as it contained Ethylmorphine..!! :heehee: Oh & of course Kaolin & Morphine when you had an upset stomach.. Do-Do tablets if you had breathing problems..
Oh my goodness just loads of things are springing to mind now...!!!! :heehee:

I couldn't stomach Famel Syrup, I always had Venos Cough Medicene which I think is still around.

The strange thing you can still buy concentrated Sulphuric acid which masquerades as a drains cleaner - had need of the stuff last year...........it did not work anyway.

Banned due to addiction of the morphine :-)

Lead Solder, the non lead substitute is terrible to use, low melting point and many dry joints appear after a while

Dabitoff was I think based on CTC - Carbon tetrachloride, a great solvent but the vapour was found to cause liver damage. When I worked in electrical engineering we used it to clean contacts on switch gear. It was also used in fire extinguishers as it's heavier than air and displaces oxygen.
I've still got a half bottle of CTC in the shed!

                Anyone want a sniff?:heehee:
