This is the first Christmas dinner that we are having at home in over 15 years. It will be a quiet and peaceful one

There will be just Mrs Shiney and I plus the wife of one of Mrs Shiney's patients as he is in hospital at the moment. After dinner we shall take her to the hospital (she doesn't drive) to spend the rest of the day with him. We'll pick her up and take her home this evening.

    I'm cooking:-

Spicy lentil soup garnished with a slice of lemon and some coriander leaves

Roast chicken with a hint of garlic and herbs
    Very crispy roast spuds
    New, boiled spuds
    Sprouts boiled - au naturelle
Cauli, boiled and tossed in sliced shallots that have been caramelised and cooked with cummin seeds
    Home made gravy

Apple and golden plum crumble (without flour, sugar or fat) slightly caramelised and topped with ground almonds, chopped nuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds
Clementines and sliced fresh mango mixed with a hint of Cachaca

I've got to baste the spuds for the last time now :D

    Have a great day :hapfeet:

I am having fish fingers and chips, and the mrs is having ham egg and chips.

I feel I should explain. Every year previous (There have been a lot of them) its always turkey, spuds, haricot beans etc, always "the same old thing" and tomorrow we will be visiting relatives (as you do) and guess what they will be offering us, yes, turkey spuds etc. So for a change we thought we would have something we really would like, so............

Oh, and we are having Christmas crackers, just not the "traditional Christmas dinner"

We had spring rolls and sesame prawn toasts followed by crispy duck pancakes followed by chicken breast coated in roasted almond with egg fried rice and vegetable noodles .. with red wine .. with our Jewish friends as we do every year. There were even nibbles to bring home for the cats and the homeless dogs we feed. :yess:

Standing rib roast in oven now, did my usual dry rub, it will roast until about 4PM. Then will make whipped potatoes, and brussel sprouts sauted in little onion and pine nuts tossed in. Then yorkshire pudding. Made a sweet potato pie early this morning, have heavy cream to whip for it. Also have some good wines to serve.

                Its only 1:30PM here.

Excluding drinks, which I shouldn't perhaps have had as I'm off to donate blood at 9.00am tomorrow.

                  We had..

Wafer thin, pastry with lightly grilled cheese and ham on top, this was served as a cold dish, followed by..

A wonderful cold fish platter with a light salad, followed by..

Roast turkey crown, with all the trimmings, b-u-g-g-e-r-s (a potatoes dish), and home grown parsnips, sprouts, leaks, onions, but sadly shop bought potatoes and carrots, followed by..

I don't really have a sweet tooth, but the above was followed by a very dark and nice home made Xmas pudding.

Turkey with bread stuffing, sprouts, roast parsnips, red cabbage and apple, mashed spuds and chestnut stuffing. We were going to follow with traditional christmas pudding but we were too full. The turkey was pretty big, it fed 10 adults and 2 tinies, there is enough for the same again tomorrow with all the left over veg as bubble and squeak.

We went to my little sister's expecting turkey and the usual medley of veg.

What we got can only be described as a banquet.

Turkey, gammon and "pigs in blankets" shared the very large meat tray with proper stuffing. Then there were separate bowls of roast parsnip, broc, cauli, peas, roasties, boiled spuds, mash, mashed turnips, and a large box of sprouts.

We ate til we were stuffed to bursting point, and then forced down some trifle.

Only had one can of very mild bitter to wash it down, as being the only one (except the hosts) that drives, guess who had to exercise restraint. Not complaining though. It was superb.

                    I'm intrigued. What's that one?
