    Trying to grow globe artichokes.
For the last 2 winters, plants all killed off in cold.
This year, I cut down and covered in manure at start of November.
By beginning of Dec they had sprouted though the manure so I cut down again and piled the manure higher.
Now at end Dec they've respouted again.
Do I recut down or just pile on a thicker mulch?
    Thanks

They're normally pretty hardy and we don't do anything to ours, which we've had for about 20 years. Hopefully some others on here may have more advice for you.

Hi belloc and welcome to the forum .

The last two winters have been very cold and we all lost various plants.

They are easy to grow given the right conditions

    • Full sun
    • Free draining soil , not water logged in the Winter
    • lots of compost /manure (well rotted) in the spring
    • Give a good couple of inces of mulch over the winter , straw, bark , old compost
Provide these 4 things and you will sucueed but its the drainage is the secret.

With the new growth coming up its because its been so mild you need to cover with fleece would be the easiest thing to do

I was away when the cold hit last year, got back to find them frozen solid. Cut them down & covered with leaves & wood chip. Lost one, but the other came back.

Fleece & keeping an eye on the weather forcast sounds good. If you keep cutting them back, it'll weaken the plant.

You can leave for a while but the wind will only knock all the old stems down , plus the empty stems can act like a down pipe with all the rain going to the heart of the plant and a place for slugs and snails to hibernate over the winter and personaly thats why I cut down and mulch the top when I grew them on the alotment
