I thought I'd better clarify the recent "ban" on Yellow and Green Sulphur in case any gardeners are under the misapprehension of it being withdrawn completely from use and Retailers. Below is a quote by Vitax, who supply Yellow and Green Sulphur for the Retail Trade, and was taken from an article from the Amateur Gardening Magazine:

"We are no longer able to supply Green or Yellow Sulphur as fungicides in the EU. While the fungicidal use of Yellow Sulphur has been withdrawn, we are continuing to supply the same material as a garden sundry.

The material is still of value as a soil acidifier and a secondary nutrient for Sulphur deficient soils. Labelling on the current products has been amended."

So Yellow Sulphur has not be withdrawn completely and it will still be available for other uses other than a fungicide. Whether or not gardeners take heed of the EU ban on the use of Yellow Sulphur as a fungicide is, I think, another matter.:D

So all we can say is, thankyou to the RHS for adding it to their withdrawn chemicals list.
Must try to remember why I stopped my membership?

And I was thinking of joining, Pete.:heehee: Did they add Sulphur to the Withdrawn Chemicals List for all purposes or did they not list it was for fungicidal purposes that it was being restricted. If it was the former they need a e-mail to point out the error.:D

Just going by a link I think Scrungee put up in another thread
            Withdrawn chemicals / RHS Gardening

To be true it states for use actually on plants, but it would have been very helpfull if they had told us the full story.

Yeah, just had a look at that, thanks for putting in the link. To be fair, the RHS has put Sulphur in the Fungicide Section of withdrawn chemicals, but as you say, Pete, a more detailed and explanatory format of data would have stopped any misunderstanding of what was actually being done and why.:D So I think an e-mail pointing out the fact that more information was needed when only partial withdrawal, i.e: for a certain purpose, was being actioned.

Can anyone enlighten me - Cheshunt Compound was withdrawn last year. Is "Murphys Copper Fungicide" still available for damping off prevention ?

While I can't find any available source of Murphy's Copper Fungicide there are, interestingly enough, plenty of copper based fungicides for sale. Also in the Amateur Gardening Magazine article about Sulphur it states "No alternative product is available but they may be talking about powder form.:D

Buy Copper (II) sulphate pentahydrate at Mistral Lab Chemicals

I don't know about specific brands, but I know copper sulphate is still widely available. I've read (ie this is not from my experience) that copper sulphate is widely used in agriculture as a fungicide, especially on tatie farms, where it is used to control blight.

In the site that I just linked to, if you scroll down a bit, they explain some of the uses. I guess they could be sort of saying 'we're not selling it as this, but some people do this'.

That's an interesting link, Clueless, you're right they not really advocating it's use on it's own, but as Bordeaux Mixture which goes back over a hundred years in use. Copper and slaked lime make up the basic components and that hasn't changed or been modified.:D

Bordeaux Mixture (and Burgundy) are going to be withdrawn in 2013. Copper sulphate from that link above is £19.06/kg. I've got this ebay seller bookmarked who sells it for £10.49 for 1.5 kg incl P&P eBay - Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate 1.5kg (copper sulfate) In addition to lime it needs a surfactant to help it stick to leaves.
