I mentioned it in the other thread it does look very likely that a severe freeze is on the way. One model output forecast -14C for Wales in a weeks time. Could all change but the cards are written now, so a cold spell (at least) is pretty much certain

Well, February is yet to come and that is always a treacherous month. My bulbs are probably shooting a little early this year, but only a little. My Snowdrops are in different stages, some flowering and some not yet. I haven't seen a frost during this Winter as yet although we did get dumped with 3 inches of snow for a day or two. I have Exochorda in partial flower but it does seem in two minds what it wants to do. I have herbaceous plants that haven't gone back into the ground but look like they did in October. Also I have some large corms of Cyclamens that I planted nearly 4 years ago that have flowered for the first time, while some small corm Cyclamens have self seeded. It may be weird right now, but lets see what February does on the reality scale.:D:coffee:

I've read several reports that are similar

    however .....

I'm a firm believer that man cannot predict nature correctly .... plants are budding, birds and geese are returning etc .... they know more than what we do

so, I say we will have a very mild winter with no extreme cold weather

If the Daily Mail say something, I tend to believe the opposite!

The proper weather forecast, on the other hand, says that things are getting colder towards the weekend.

I agree with you, andrew:D I truly haven't bought a newspaper in over 30 years as they couldn't print the truth or facts to save their lives. I've noticed though that the Met Office always gets a bit nervous and hedge their bets when it comes to bad weather just recently. While I know it's hard to be precise their forecasts become very vague when a bad low looms over the horizon.............scared of another Michael Fish???? I like Positive Weather Solutions as a forecaster of weather or if I'm desperate my sea weed and pine cone.:D

You're welcome to ignore it, by all means, but this time around it's probably better to be prepared. I know I'm taking it very seriously after losing countless plants last winter!

Most Mail Online weather reports don't include dates, so they all appear to be 'current' forecasts as their webpage always has the current date on top. Have at look at this link and you'll see that 'big freeze is on the way' story is word for word the same as one the Mail Online reported back in September 2011 - scroll down to fredbolt's quote:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/coffeebreak/chat/f/t-10237128/p-2/index.html - clicking on the link at the bottom of fredbolt's post (posted on 28/09/11) will take you to that 'big freeze' story. It's an old report from last year.

We take the weather as it comes - no choice really! :D

Most of our plants have survived the last two cold winters but more of them are suffering from the prolonged drought For 2011 we have had 40% less rain than our average (our village have been recording rainfall for over 100 years :rolleyespink:) and although the surface of our soil is damp now it is almost bone dry a couple of inches down. The local ditches are completely empty and we still haven't been forecast any rain. :(

Like ARMANDII we have all the spring flowers starting and our exochordas have been blooming (but they've stopped now). I saw a hollyhock in bloom yesterday

I saw 3 Ladybirds yesterday and a large wasp; my Ceanothus hedge in the back which was frozen to within an inch of its life last year (loosing all its leaves!) is now lovely and healthy, vibrant glossy green leaves and it even has some flowers open!!...:D
