Pitcher plant

Has anyone grown any sarracenia from seed? any tips ? can they really grow outdoor ? thank you all

 

Grown them from my own seed produced by my plants.
Its not a fast process, perhaps three or four years before you get a decent sized plant.

I was quite well "into" sarracenias for a while and grew a few of the more common species, there are a lot of hybrids around these days.
I dont have many now, but what I do have remain outdoors all year.

IMO, you get longer, cleaner, undamaged pithers if grown under cold glass, but they appear to be totally hardy around here.

Thank you Pete , the way they present the seeds it a fast growing plant , I would have both them and expected a fast growing one season plant .....still look good and may buy one or 2 plant.

I'd buy plants Sal, but seeds are intresting to grow, but then I used to have loads of patience

 

Sal, you may know this but if keeping them indoors I would recommend only watering with rain water unless the water is very soft as they can't cope with chalk or lime very well.

 

The Nepenthes it`s easy to find in garden center and absolutly a stunning plant, but that`s a tropical and once again to many to overwinter, so it`s on my avoid list.
Pete , did you had to create a bog pit to grow them?
they suppose to be hardy to zone 8 and only grown in bog and true some of the new hybrid can reach up to 3 feet , plus sarracenia flower are stunning.

 

I have a trough with drainage holes halfway up the sides, plus a few in pots kept in a tray of water.
They are in moss peat compost, no fertiliser, just acid peat.

I do have a plant of Sarracenia maxima that gets reasonably tall.
Taller if grown under glass.

Pete , they are a must have , really nice .
My original idea was to convert an old ceramic sink into a bog trough , as i was trying to grow some reindeer white moss and maybe some outdoor orchids , but your idea of trough with drainage holes halfway up it way much better , as that will stop the ceramic trough to freeze solid and crack ...as much as I wish to never see another winter like the last one.
