Loving some of the comments on this thread :dbgrtmb:. We are not exactly the most Royalist forum are we. Probably being gardeners we all must have peasant blood in our veins :yess:
A nice quip on TV last night , can't remember the show .
The queen turned the TV on , Downton Abbey was showing . She turned to Philip saying "ohhh this must be Eastenders !" :D

Am I right in thinking its OK for us Brits to bash the Royals, just as long as no foreigners do.
Its kind of a national pastime, but its only us that can do it.

Anyone else from anywhere in the world, and we are likely to close ranks.

Otherwise, why are they still in existence?

I'm a royalist and don't mind admitting it, as I've said before we could do a lot worse, just look across the water!

Without naming names, I was thinking looking south and beyond and further west than Ireland. :heehee:

When you live on an island, "across the water", is slightly vague:D

            Brazil then?

It's only a few hundred years since theories such as the Divine Right of Kings were current in our society and semi-supernatural beliefs such as the King's Touch, believed to cure scrofula, were prevalent.

Human beings don't change that fast fast - if at all. There's a part of our social make-up which needs - or tolerates - a ruling figurehead, priveleged and special beyond reason.

I'm very happy to see change, but would like it to be slow and steady. If the Royal family were all to be guillotined tomorrow I don't think it would improve society and other less desirable figureheads would appear to occupy the vacated pedestal. Queen Jordan, maybe. I think we may as well stick with Liz and Phil and let progress gradually take its course.

With regard to the Diamond Jubilee I'm sure they've got plans to keep Phil on ice just in case he was so inconsiderate as to spoil the celebrations by being snatched up to heaven at the wrong moment.

Not too keen on the 'royals' but I can say from experience that if you have a heart problem the NHS reaction (in this area) is and was in my case - immediate. I was kept in hospital for four days after having some breathing problems and some six weeks later had a triple bypass - as good a treatment as Phillip himself I am sure..............

We are certainly not royalists, in fact, can't abide most of them ... but ...

... back some 15 years ago or so we met Prince Phillip .. at the Cumbria Horse Trials and he was delightful. Friends of ours from here (sadly he is now deceased) were doing the sound system for the Trials and we went up from Bucks for the weekend. HRH came for one day but Phillip was there all the time wandering around in the muck (did have two bodyguards but not suffocating him). He was very friendly and chatting to all and sundry.

We stayed in a campervan on the hillside .. as did Phillip but two levels down from us, about 50 meters only. He had a big BBQ the one night and invited us all but we did not attend and had our friends chicken piri-piri instead.

It was really nice seeing them (certainly him) out of the royal scene, just casual and very natural.

Well I served MY QUEEN and COUNTRY
I am, not really bothered wether the Royals are reported on or not, it is just of a little interest, but agree with Zigs of the precedence given in the News

As for the NHS I have no problem at all
I had a stroke, and in minutes I was in a Hospital bed, got the best of treatment, and thankfully recovered. not three days later like the DUKE but three months, so I used up more than he did

I agree LESS URGENT procedures can take months to be seen, which is not the best, but it is CHEAP, Especially for the ones who have never paid a penny into the pot in their lives

I've only had one brush with Royalty.
It was after the repairs were finished to Windsor Castle, after the fire, the Mrs herself invited me and quite a few others:loll: that had worked on the job, there, for an evening.

They all came out and mingled, "Her indoors", the Duke, Charlie, Andrew and Anne.

Never got near any of them for a chat though, too many admirers.:loll:
