Ok, well not quite, but nearly as good.

This is quite bizarre because I grew up about a mile from where I now live. Granted I was away for nearly 20 years but areas can't change that much. I've always known about the public bridleway just up the road that leads out of town. What I didn't know about until yesterday, was that if instead of following the bridleway in a straight line, if you take the lesser used path to the left which appears to go nowhere, it actually goes into some woodland that I didn't even know existed. Not only that but there is a network of paths and trails through this woodland, and it is almost possible to get lost in there, despite the fact that I know for fact it can't be more than a couple of hundred yards wide by half a mile or so.

Its quite fantastic, because knowing in great detail what's on every side of it, I can't fathom how a woodland that size can possible fit there.

Saw a few pines in there. Scots Pine unless I'm mistaken, but mostly deciduous broad leaf trees. Quite a few birch, one or two willows, lots of other trees that I couldn't identify (and didn't really try to be honest).

I think they might have all been native species. Possibly planted as part of an environmental stewardship scheme or similar.

In my total lack of expertise in these matters, I'd say that the whole woodland is probably no more than about 20 years old, which might go some way to explaining why I didn't know it was there (given that before moving back just under 2 years ago, I've lived away for best part of 20 years).

No turkish delight and fortunately nobody chased us on a sleigh, although there was the occasional dog walker, a kid on a scooter, and a whole family including one kid with a brand new bike, helmet and knee pads.

I found a similar area once, near Sandwich in Kent. We had walked across a field and, in the corner, found a gate leading into a wooded area. Inside, there were loads of paths leading off mysteriously, there was a stream and we even found a lake (or maybe it was a large pond). Anyway, it seemed a very large area to be tucked away into the corner of a field, and we spent some time wandering around the various paths before finding the gate again. It was last summer, so no sleighs, snow or mystical animals apart from a few ducks :heehee:
