A question about Banana seeds. How long does it take for Banana seed to germinate and how long before a small reasonable plant is grown.:scratch: It's just that I'm thinking of getting some seeds although I'm going to be busy with my first serious year with Cannas.:D

Took mine a few weeks, as for small reasonable plant, I was cutting a 40 gallon barrel in half the following year to pot it on.

      It was Girt, very quickly.

Thanks Ziggy, knew I could rely on you.:love30: If you cut a 40 gallon barrel in half how did you stop the compost from falling out:scratch::scratch::heehee::heehee::loll:

The key is having fresh seed, some can take a lot longer than Ziggys experience but dont give up. I know of people who have had them germinate two years later!

Thanks TG, I've ordered seeds of Musa Ensete superbum "Rock Banana", Musa manni "Indian Dwarf Banana", Musa coccinea "Red Banana", from Jungle Seeds. So with the emphasis on fresh seed how soon should I sow on receiving the seeds?:D

I gave up on my banana seeds after 6 months last year. It was my first attempt, maybe I wasn't patient enough.

Funny you should say that, Sheal. You know you've just had some major work done on your house?, I was just wondering...................................???:D:loll::loll::love30::heehee:

I'm hoping that I don't have to wait six months, JWK. Were they in a heated propagator???, and should I sow them immediately on receiving them:scratch::D

I've only managed to get Ensete and Sikkimiensis to grow from seed, but must admit to not trying many.

I know most are fairly tender when you start trying the more unusual ones.
So I dont have the winter space and heat.

Jungle seeds usually has good quality seed. We have never grown bananas from seed, but have had other seeds from Peter. He also has a related site Jungle Plants - some stunning bananas for sale (although can be expensive - especially for the very rare ones)
