I came across this and wondered if anyone has used it?

Apparently my PC has 703 registry errors.
So maybe the scrapheap would be the best place for it.

Would like to know if it works, or is worth bothering with.

I get a funny feeling that it wont be able to solve all of those errors without me paying them some money:skp:

    Thanks in advance.

An awful lot of these 'Free fixes' are far from it. They often are just virus and trojan carriers. CCleaner is a better bet.

    Pete

I have never used it. But having had a Google at some reviews, it looks to be respectable.

There are a lot of good free programs out there that can check and correct things on your PC. I used them quite a bit at one time, but don't bother now. But as Palustris says there are also nasty programs. My view is that if they approach me - I ignore them. But if I want something I look at PC reviews and forums.

Sadly you can get a lot of cr*p on your machine. Unscrupulous sites say it is all it is all malevolent, and you must buy their program to get rid of it. But most of it is just rubbish, and if I don't have a specific problem I don't worry too much.

However it does raise an important question of backing up important data, in case of a disaster. Most stuff like programs, you can afford to lose because they can be replaced. But personal stuff, like photos, personal records, email addresses etc do need to be backed up somewhere - preferably more than one copy. I use an external USB disk drive that is not connected most of the time. If you have your key stuff backed up, its much less important whether you run such programs or not.

    Well I'm still here.
As I thought, it was only capable of fixing 15 of the errors, the other 688 are going to cost me money.

Now, do I run the scan again and hope I can fix another 15, or do I just give up.

I dont mind paying for things, but I do resent being "sucked in".
While I realise these kind of things cannot work without money, somebody has to create the programme, I feel they are missleading.

    Neither

download and use a free one

    I use

    http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

it's freeware - they ask if you would like to pay about £10 but you don't have to and it will clean them all. I'm sure there are other safe ones too.

Martin's Money Saving expert is the sit I use to find free prgrammes to do what I want

There are systems which don't have a registry so don't have this problem.

I agree with Hec - don't pay for it - thats what they want you to do, The problems are probably non existant - its just a big "come on".

There are loads of free programs out there. Some are time limited, so you save the installation program on your disk and just reinstall it when the time limit runs out, if you want.

You can learn a huge amount by Googling all the different facets. It can be a hobby in itself, and very time consuming. I had a sticky toolbar in Internet Explorer at one time, that I just couldn't get rid of. And I got quite into the different sorts of nasties that you could catch. Sometimes clean up programs would say trouble with xxxxx.exe. So I would Google that program to see what it did. Sometimes the programs would say trojan 345j6 found - so I would Google that as well.

I particularly like forums, because they are usually independant. Any one site could just be selling a product.

Ok.I think I'll uninstall it bearing in mind its not going to be of any use.

I'll give that one of yours a go Hec and see how it goes.

I must admit Peter, I do find the technical side of computers a bit boring, I know I should find out more, but its just a subject that I'm not really interested in.
Its just times when there appears to be a problem, I wish I knew more.

Pete - I enjoy the technical side of computers, but I understand anyone that doesn't. Its like that with me with food. I enjoy the eating bit - but not so keen on the techncal cooking bit. :D

Sparky - I don't know how the forum is funded. I have only just seen the Uniblue advert - I hadn't realised it was on this site. But that is just one of a number of adverts - which are a recent addition.

I use to love all those free "Clean/Speed up your pc" apps. i don't bother any longer.
I'm running Vista x64 on my very fast computer.
I have had vista on here for just over 1 month now. It's not slow at all. Infact it is fast and as stable as a rock. I do have a AMD FX4100 x4 cpu and 8GB ram in it.
I did have Win7 on here but i found the eye candy a little to much.

I'm going to post my computer build in my profile. Purely to point out how you do NOT have to spend tons on get a decent pc.

I think the power of PC's have come to a bit of a stand still, it's all about the amount of cores one can fit in to a single die nowadays. All good.

Truth be told if you already have a quad core cpu with 4GB of ram then you're fine.
My Pc cost me £420 to build and it plays all the latest games including Crysis at full settings. Another £140 for the 24" screen. A total of £560!

If you were to buy one of those "off the shelf" PC's you'd get half the power of my pc.
Those iMacs? They may look pretty and yes they're fast as hell but when they break you thenhave to pay Apple a huge feee to have them fixed whereas if you build your own, you're the one replacing hardware or fixing errors.
Truth be told, th only thing i have had die on me is the odd hard drive her eand there.

Regarding those speed your pc up tools.
Leave them alone and let windows do the work for you.
I use to be religeous about using those apps, nowadays i think "sod it" and let windows do it for me.

Then again i do leave my pc on 24/7. Don't forget that Windows runs scripts on a daily basis that deals with things such as this.

If you're referring to the forum we're using now (Gardenerscorner), it's funded by the Webmaster and some members make donations. For some years it was totally funded by the webmaster until some of us asked if we could help towards it. It's a brilliant forum and very well run. :dbgrtmb:

I hate to say this, but this thread was started over 2 years ago.
Would it not be better to split it? and sparky who asked about forum funding also asked over 2 years ago,and has not posted in over 7 months
