Before I smash a big hole in my living room wall....

Well I've drilled a few exploratory holes in the wall, and I'm more confused than ever now. I think I've drilled through quarter inch ply skimmed with plaster. Through one of the holes, I can see what I thought was a pipe at first, but a more careful look suggests is wood, but I don't think its anything to do with the original door.

I've decided to suspend my survey work now until I've had chance to buy one of the wire/pipe detector gadgets, just in case.

 

Could be the True Cross. Walled up there centuries ago by Joseph of Aramathea on a rare visit to Redcar.

Pah one of them "girly" detectors, Far more exciting to go for it, then call the Fire brigade, gas man and plumber
The video can be sold onto you've been framed to cover some of the costs

I reckon the architrive has been removed, which would leave room for the board to sit flush with the wall then skimmed over, No point in removing the door or frame, (just extra work for something that is about to be hidden)

Now the use of sisters identical house
Measure the distance from the window to the centre of the first acrchitrive
Do the same at home and with a chisel gouge a groove three inches across the centre about half an inch deep, I am sure you will then see the join
Which you can then follow down with a Stanley knife to the floor
Job almost done and it is not even time for morning elevenses :-)
