Onion seeds

Hi anyone know when is the best time to plant my onion seeds in trays in my poly tunnel for later trans planting please I dont want to be late getting them in Cheers Mick

 

I've already sown my first batches of onion seed but I start them off in a heated propogator. I'm attempting to grow "giant" specimens!

You can quite easily leave them to March/April, as I will be doing with my everyday maincrop varieties. Hope this helps.

 

Traditional day for sowing onion seed is Boxing day, that's not to say your too late though.

Like Vince I have sown my giant onions already with some bottom heat and will sometime through January sow my normal red onions too, but I'm in no rush to sow those so will wait till I have my propogating bench ready for them.

I take it that's indoors or under glass.

What about outdoors? Straight into their intended growing space?

 

Hi Clueless yes indoors in my poly tunnel in cells of 84 I have 700 Ailsa Craig & 1000 Ramatm Milano seeds to sow. Mick

 

I usually sow in the greenhouse in early Feb and grow on cool, into a cold frame about early March and plant out in April.
I find too much warmth causes soft growth and the plants flop over.

I only grow for use in the kitchen though.

I've never tried sowing direct, I assume you get smaller bulbs, later as well.
But I cant think its worth outdoor sowing until at least late March, you need to wait for the soil to warm up, a bit dependant on the weather really.

 

Sowing direct into the soil? make sure the soil is above 10 degrees cent and will remain so.

 

I find the slugs have them away if I sow them direct.

 

I don't think I've ever sown directly into situ, far too risky, slugs, snails are always on the prowl for a cheap meal :(

 

Shows how much I know. I might grow from sets then this year (it'll be my first attempt at onions). Sounds easier and less fuss.

 

Sowing from seed IS easy if you just employ some common sense. Cheaper too :D

Hi Freddy I think Pete grows them cold under cover maybe a polly or glass house then into cold frames to harden off a bit then planted on later.cheers Mick
