    Same Family, different fish.

Herring gets quite big, when its smoked it becomes a Kipper.

If its smoked for a very long time so that it will last on a long sea voyage it becomes a Red Herring, these were used to feed the slave trade and ironically have been taken up by Carribean Cusine.

Sardines are narrower, ones i've caught have been about a foot long.

Pilchards and Sardines are exactly the sam fish, just different names, the ailing cornish pilchard industry re branded themselves as Cornish Sardines some years back & saved the industry.

Sprats are usually about 4 to 5 inches long and occur in flocks of millions. Everything eats them.

These are all oily fish and very good for you.
