I've no experience of planting at this time of year, but as it has been so mild I reckon you can get away with it. Where-abouts are you and what is your soil like?

If it's heavy clay I wonder if you should cover your new plantings with fleece if the weather does turn very cold.

                  Depends how large they are.
Personally, I'll be waiting a while yet - the weather is predicted to take a cold turn over the next week.
Certainly too early for Salvia I would have said though.

I agree with longk:love30::love30::heehee: Theoretically you could plant the perennials now but as they're mostly herbaceous and therefore shouldn't be in "the green" right now I would wait for warmer weather and also signs that they are starting to put up new growth. It is difficult at this time of grey Winter to be patient but the saying "do in haste, regret in leisure" does hold. I would probably plant shrubs and the like now but not herbaceous perennials.:D

                      Just a thought here .....
You're planning on planting 70 items ........ is this now or over the growing year ? ? Are these plugs or full sized pot grown items ? ? ?

If it's the latter they would hold their own as long as the predicted minus temperatures (minus 1 for this region) don't come along.
If they're plugs though leave it until late spring because they'll be much too young, pot them on perhaps and that's all.

I'm not sure I'd plant anything now, as it won't be able to get its roots down before the freeze comes. I'm actually in the process of digging anything up that isn't tolerant of -10C - thats most of the garden actually :D
