Soot

Happy New Year everyone

When we had our chimneys swept just before Christmas, the Chimneysweep told my husband, that soot is very good for the garden . Is this true, or is he telling porkies, 'cos he has just dropped off 2 bags of it.

Leave it in a corner to 'mature' for a year or two, then add to water as a foliar feed. Cheers, Tony.

 

nope it is indeed true my father was a sweep and he always used it on our garden

in the autumn he would stock pile a load of it and mix it in to the compost heap as well as diggin it in to the soil as he removed crops i also recall that he used to use it in the spring on top of the soil around seedlings ( the brasics mainly) to detere the snails and slugs MUCH to the annoyance of my mother who would go mad if the wind picked up and it blew on her washing
he never used soot from someones house if he thought they may have used creosote on the wood though

havent got access to soot myself so i dont use it on my garden

I know slugs don't like crossing it, I put a circle round one & he/she it didn't know which way to go.

Enthused by that, I put circles of it round my Pea seedlings, which it promptly killed stone dead.

Should have left it 5 months to weather

 

If you ever visit a Victorian house, look at the soil. It will be black, that is from all the soot in it. Soot MUST be weathered for at least a season, then it can be used as a soil conditioner, pesticide ( slugs and snails ) and supplier of trace elements.

 

my old man was tight fisted so trust me if it had ever killed any thing he wouldnt have used it again
