This is my family rose, so to speak. Comes from a garden in Sweden, and was already there by 1964 when my father bought it. House built in 1942.

It is 4-5 ft tall, once-flowering, May/June, scented and spreads like mad - which is a good thing in this case. The photo was taken in 2004, and in 2001 the rose bush had been literally pint-sized - I brought it back in a small plastic bag from Sweden - so very hardy too.

    Any ideas?

Looks very like 'La Belle Distinguee' which is a small once flowering old shrub rose.

I'm no expert, but it looks like the Rosa Gallica versicolor that I used in my last Chelsea garden "The Pilgrim's Rest".

I'm sure Woo will have the answer!

          Thasnk for your ideas.

I agree it's a Gallica no doubt, but it's all pink, in various tones, verging on purple etc at times, but no white, that's a trick of the light!
