You now have the bug, no cure apart from growing plants and collecting them will be intresting so see what you choose and we are all fickle on here one minute this next minute that :love30::love30::love30::love30::love30: and the weather over the past two years has changed it dramaticaly for me I am now growing tougher plants that can survive the colder winters we are now having 3rd year on the trot
I have tried to work out is it the hunting down and finding that plant you have been after as I tend to go flat when its been planted but get a boost when its in flower , I was after Puppet Lady a hemerocallis aka daylily and now have it , it better flower this year !!!!!

But I want this year Lily Munster & Flutering Beauty both are within my sights :yay::yay::yay:

But dont forget you have to sit down like Armandii with a big mug of tea and sit and relax and just take the moment in .........

We are? I would have thought this winter was entirely normal. A few nights at around -6C, but no prolonged cold spells (assuming this current cold snap does go by mid-week as forecasted)

        Kristen

Up to two years ago for over 10 years I hadnt had minus 1 let alone minus 5 like Saturday and last year minus 10 for a solid 5 days , I live very close to the coast I dont know what weather Suffolk throws at you but taking in to account I only have 3 agapanthus varieties left from 25 which I built up the collection over 12 years and all grew outside.
I would appreciate you dont quote me as its the norm maybe for you but not for me because its not so take in to account location in the UK first.

I read somewhere that they preform better when in a clump (although whether plant three or four "singles" close together has the same effect who knows? They'll look better for sure, but you need more bulbs (and each project in my garden tends to be on the "large" side!!)

"Would you advise moving the propagator into a warmer area???"

I'd advise moving the tray the Banannas are sown in (if your propagator has trays?) to a warmer area for part-time, or jacking the propagator up if the propagator can deliver that?

30-35C for 9 hours and 12-15C for the other 15 hours. I suspect mine got 6 hours, but then the temperature would tail off slowly to 10C-18C

I would also water with a seed-fungicide to prevent rotting - like with anything where germination takes a while.

Maybe your brother has the Spanish ones Jack? They flower on all sides round the stem, whereas the English ones only flower on one side and thus "droop over" on that side.

The Spanish ones are a menace; I burnt all the ones that were here when we moved in ...

Thanks for the advice, Kristen, I will move the propagator into a warmer area today.

You can see Spruce's point about what he regards as being abnormal when he suffers periods of below minus temperatures in his area. East Anglia has been renown for cold Winters and snow fall..............I can remember being "volunteered" while in the RAF to dig out the local farmers sheep that were buried in the snow. Two totally different micro climates between the West Coast and the East Coast.

Don't you get drawn into the Crazy Collectors Club, Joolz:nono::nono::D:heehee: Spruce is registered as a CCC [Confirmed Crazy Collecter]:rolleyespink::rolleyespink::D Get your garden to how you want it............and then dream about rare plants. Like Spruce says, take time to sit there and absorb it all, knowing you made it and it's all yours:thumbsup::coffee:

Just thinking the next time I am down visiting my Brother I will get a sack and send them off to you (as I say they are nothing special just common English bluebells as you would see in any wood)

When I get them I will give you a shout, dependent on the time of year for planting

                Jack McH

They're always special, Jack, when you can see them by the thousands in a sun lit wood!!:D

Well, I guess we're all a little crazy and addicted in our own way, Joolz. I over plant in my craze to get as much colour in the borders for as long as I can. I've never entered in the "dark" practice of fastening my craziness on one kind of plant though:nono::nono:, unlike some people [mentioning no names:heehee::heehee::loll:]. A Potting Shed?, well at least Darran will know where to find you!! I think getting a Polytunnel is a good idea, as it will give you more space and flexibility to grow stuff. Let us know how your fish have fared. Mine are still okay, partly from it being up to 4'ft deep in parts and having the Pond Heater. Fingers crossed for you anyway/:thumbsup:

I confess to being crazy enough to buy another thermostatically controlled heated propagator, which I'm hoping will arrive tomorrow. One of my crazy projects this year is to grow as many varieties Primulas and Primroses from seed to go around the pond and other areas, Plus I've now got 20 or so pots of 16 different Cannas at rest in my Kitchen and Cool Room, and 4 different varieties of them in seed form in the Fridge waiting to be sown.

I'm still waiting for my Snowdrops and Bluebells to arrive, but I would think that with this freezing weather it'll be a couple of weeks yet.

I've also got my eye on some Ferns to go against the rockery and underneath the Acer but trying to resist the temptation...............that won't last long.!!

Just finished planting my Snowdrops ... I went with Eurobulbs and bought £100-plus-a-few-pennies to get their 100-free-singles-per-£50 ... so I guess around 1,000 bulbs.

When I get my Ferrari I'm going to get it from them - I expect they'll send me very nearly one-and-a-half Ferraris :) I know you always get a few small ones attached to the parent, and some small ones that fall off in transit, but even ignoring them Eurobulb's counting was "generous" :)

Good looking bulbs, quick efficient delivery ... and I've planted a larger area than I had anticipated :blue thumb:

Only thing I didn't do was remember to take a photo earlier on today - although a few leaves trailing out of planting holes is perhaps not going to be the most interesting subject!
