Best Seed Compost

We have discussed the merits of brands of multi purpose compost extensively. Seemed like Wickes and B and Q were the top tips. When it comes to seed compost I always use B and Q's , which seems to do the job OK. Does anyone use other brands with good to super results ? To be honest I don't seem to see seed compost in most of the other garden centres

 

i use new horizons multi purpose compost for my seed with great results and it's peat free

 

i've used many types of compost the brand i use now was the best deal as i buy it by the pallet. i'd use any compost but my pet hate is when it has big lumps of wood/bark in it

 

Professionally, I have always used Levington F2 +sand but when it wasn't available for a time I used Violet Farm and Growise multi from the GC next to our Nursery. It was fine for both seed sowing and general purpose potting (except shrubs).

 

I've always used B & Q multi-purpose and never felt the need to use anything else, it's never let me down and is reasonably priced. If it works why change to something else?

 

Violet Farms compost I rate but it is a bit to hot for seeds IMO Levingtons F2 never failed yet for tender seeds,For tough seeds I use any decent growbag riddled first mixed with vermiculite works for me.

 

I've never bothered choosing a specific seed compost, I make my own and as long as it's free draining and airy so the seeds dont rot, that'll do for me. Seeds have their own reserves of food to get them going anyway.

one of my clients grows most of his veg from seed .... he never bothers with compost .... he uses ordniary topsoil from his own garden

once the plants need transplanting, he then uses compost/manure etc

 

Thanks for all the inputs - I will try Levingtons F2 this year , if I can find a stockist. If not it will be the old B and Q seed compost .

 

Hi Sheal, its because men always want to change and fiddle with things , until they break them ! Then say it needed replacing anyway :D

I have just seen " J Arthur Bowers John Innes soil based seed compost " in my local GC . Has anyone any experience of this , good or bad?

 

i've used it harrys it's fine stuff.
i used some to repot some hungry buxus i've got in pots added some swell gel and osmocoat as well that was back in april and they are doing good :D

 

I use John Innes soil-based mixed with a multipurpose compost and vary the ratios depending on what I'm doing. John Innes is more expensive than typical multipurpose and can be a bit dense and heavy without some multipurpose mixed in.
