I can remember paying approximately £12 for my weekly shopping when first married. It wouldn't get me much now. :)

If you think about it the biggest jump in inflation was when "they" converted the Pound Sterling from 240 pennies to 100 pennies................and then everything seemed to cost twice the original price and the automatic rounding up to the nearest penny made it even more expensive.:dunno::( We should have stayed with 240 pennies to the pound because I'm blowed if I can see what good decimalisation has done for us.:dunno::scratch::D

The Half Farthing was minted as that was the standard price of a loaf of bread.

Without getting my calculator out I think there were 1,920 half farthings to a pound, so thats 1,920 loaves of bread you could have bought compared to todays £1

Biggest con was doing away with the half pence, or half D as they called it
It meant everything went up 1.5 old pence minimum

Parrafin is a joke, £7 for five litres, you can buy best unleaded for £6
one reason I have not bought a heater for the green house, now looking at frost control electric, only have to cable electrickery to it

I must admit I did not know about the half farthing...
I know I used to as a lad help sell parrafin out the back of an Austin 16.
A 45 gall drum in the back and we used to tour the streets and the cost was 2/- a gall
