They weigh a lot of £££££:loll:all ways interests me how they were dug out by hand, there are a lot of canals around here and tunnels all made by sweat and blood not a JCB insite!
Another interesting build is the Birmingham water supply the Elan aquaduct
The aqueduct is 73 miles (117 km) long down which the water travels at less than 2 miles per hour, taking one and a half days to get to Birmingham.
    Again all dug by hand!

Being a cynical old Hector. . . .This resurgence of canals, (I live a few miles from Caen Hill flight and the Wilts and Berks canal is being restored just down the road), could the eventual outcome be a sneaky sneaky method of transporting water from the wet North West to the dry South East ? Just a thought. :dunno: Cheers, Tony.

with all these drought warnings I have never understood why the take the water from the source of a river where there is a small amount and not at the other end, before it gets tidal and is lost to salt water seas.
This is not for the canals but for the reservoirs, for human consumption

Another 'point to ponder', why don't they dredge the existing reserviours? They must be feet deep in sediment. Good for the land.:happydance:

    Cheers, Tony.

They already use the river system to get water from one region to another. They pump water into the river near the source to balance extra extraction further down.

You trying to scare Val out of moving to Wales Dai?:D

I loved it when they changed our local lock gates, there was a deep frost, and the river bed froze, otherwise you would have sunk into the mud.

I walked the few miles from the lock to home, my hand had a pile of coins stretching from my finger tips to the bottom of my palm, plus some nice clay ink pots.
